They say that Oscar weekend is the perfect time to sneak out obviously terrible movies, but that can't be true.
Because Tyler Perry?s Madea Goes To Jail is the new weekend box office number and that absolutely isn't an obviously terri… no, hang on. Madea Goes To Jail is a prison film about a man in a female fat suit, isn't it? OK, we take it back.
So Madea Goes To Jail won't win any Oscars, but at least it's the best ever movie about a black man in a female fat suit. Or the fifth best. Oh, forget it.
Releasing a film on Oscar weekend is a tricky affair – on one hand hardly anyone does it, so you're almost guaranteed a weekend box office number one. But on the other hand, it's a little bit of an admission that your film is rubbish. And that's probably the case with this week?s weekend box office number one, Tyler Perry?s Madea Goes To Jail.
Having said that, we were a little surprised when the Oscars weren't interrupted last night by a breathless Academy member bursting into the auditorium, snatching the award from the hands of Heath Ledger?s emotional family and declaring that Tyler Perry?s Madea Goes To Jail was a more worthy winner. No, actually that's a lie. Here?s the US weekend top five…
1 – Madea Goes To Jail (Now, we haven't really been bothered to look up what Madea Goes To Jail is about. But on the basis that it's a) a Tyler Perry film, b) it has the word ?jail? in the title and c) there's a man dressed as a woman in it, we can only assume that it's a remake of Mrs Doubtfire where Mrs Doubtfire gets anally brutalised by a psychopathic child-murderer and then talks about her feelings for about a million hours afterwards) $41,120,000
2 – Taken (Right, OK, we've completely run out of things to say about Taken, so here are some words that rhyme with ?taken? instead – bacon, shaken, waken, mistaken, forsaken, Jamaican. That is all. On with your day now) $11,400,000
3 – Coraline (After three weeks in the weekend box office, we're now determined never to find out what Coraline is about. If anyone tries, we're going to Anthrax your family, OK? OK.) $11,031,000
4 – He's Just Not That Into You (As a side note, we?d just like to point out that we?d rather punch our mouth off and set fire to one of our testicles than watch He's Just Not That Into You. So long as everyone knows. Thanks) $8,540,000
5 – Slumdog Millionaire (Rocketing back up the weekend box office for some reason. We really can't think why. Maybe it was video of us calling Dev Patel a mofo from a couple of weeks ago. Yes, we're almost certain that's it) $8,050,000
