Remember the film Eight Mile? If you don't, here's a basic recap; Eminem basically played Eminem in a remake of The Karate Kid that had less kicking and more people calling each other's Mum a slag.
Eminem was such a success playing himself in Eight Mile that another Eminem film is being lined up – and it's a remake of rootin'-tootin', tobacco-spittin', barroom-brawlin' cowboy TV series Have Gun Will Travel. Only it's not about cowboys any more. And it'll probably be set in Detroit. And Eminem will probably be playing himself again.
It's been all go in the Eminem camp lately. Now that he's almost definitely stopped dressing up as a Mexican and going "Ring-a-chong, a-ching-chong-chong-chong-chong" in music videos, Eminem has turned his hand to other efforts, like lording over ringtones of his music like a paranoid control freak, foolishly remarrying the ex-wife who he insulted in both song and body art and then inevitably divorcing her again four months later.
So what can Eminem do now? He's ticked off music, buggering up his personal life and trying to keep control of whatever tiny aspects of his life he's still able to keep hold of, so what else can Eminem do? Make another film, that's what! Eminem has signed up with Paramount to star in a remake of 1950s TV series Have Gun Will Travel. Well, we say 'remake', but from what we can tell, Eminem's Have Gun Will Travel will be nothing like the Have Gun Will Travel TV show.
When Have Gun Will Travel was a TV show, it revolved around Paladin – a gun-slinging bounty hunter dressed in black with a dodgy moustache who gave out business cards reading 'Have Gun Will Travel… Wire Paladin, San Francisco' and shot people a lot in the Wild West. However, it's rumoured that the Eminem-starring Have Gun Will Travel movie will be set in modern-day Detroit and be packed full of Eminem hits.
Does this sound like a winning formula to anyone else? You take a well-respected franchise, get rid of everything except the title, then set it in Detroit and make Eminem star in it. Genius! Coming soon: Eminem stars in a remake of Daniel Deronda, but with less English noblemen and explorations of spiritual pursuit vs worldly gain, and more of Eminem shooting people in Detroit and rapping a bit.
