The 2005 Emmy Awards were held last night. And in the most part, trophies were handed out to traditionally beloved shows instead of newcomers.
Before the awards, everyone expected 2005 to be the year of Desperate Housewives. But that show was comprehensively beaten by a depressing nine-year-old sitcom a family that openly hates each other.
We were never really that sure whether Desperate Housewives (DVDs) was a
comedy or not. Each episode is an hour long, and there aren’t really
any jokes in it. But it has been winning lots of trophies this year, so
everyone assumed that it would win a whole bunch of Emmy awards. In the
end, only Felicity Huffman won for Best Comedy Actress.
But even though Desperate Housewives isn’t really a comedy, it was
still much funnier than the winner of the Best Comedy Series award.
Everybody Loves Raymond won that, and we’re bewildered as to why.
Chances are it was given as a sentimental retirement present – the show
finally ended earlier in the year – but we still don’t get it.
All the characters in Everybody Loves Raymond openly hate each
other. Not in a funny way, but in a petty, awkward way. Peter Boyle,
who played the Dad in Everybody Loves Raymond, also played the Dad in
Monster’s Ball. And he was exactly the same character in both things.
He didn’t win anything, though. As well as Best Comedy Series, the show
also won both Best Supporting Comedy Actor and Actress.
The other winner of note was Lost. This will probably be the only
time that the show wins Best Drama Series unless the new season
actually answers some questions instead of adding layers of
increasingly pointless riddles.
And no, we didn’t win any of the bets we placed on the awards.
Here are the winners of the main categories:
Comedy Series – Everybody Loves Raymond
Actress, Comedy Series – Felicity Huffman, Desperate Housewives
Actor, Comedy Series – Tony Shalhoub, Monk
Drama Series – Lost
Actress, Drama Series – Patricia Arquette, Medium
Actor, Drama Series – James Spader, Boston Legal
