Two big new movie releases this week. One was Date Night – a film that combines the superlative comic talents of Steve Carell and Tina Fey.
The other was Letters To God. Letters To God describes itself as ‘a heartfelt tale of inspiration, hope and redemption’, features a cancer patient writing things like “Dear God, can you see the stars from heaven?” from the roof of his house, has a trailer that mentions God at least four times a minute and which has inspired YouTube comments such as “my opinion is, God is an awesome God! And the only God!”. So which film triumphed at the weekend box office this week?
Date Night, obviously. Letters To God didn’t even make the top five. Seriously, it sounds rubbish.
Date Night is the top movie at the weekend box office, and thank goodness for that. Not only does it combine two of America’s funniest people, offer gratuitous scenes of Mark Wahlberg without a top on and provide a much-needed moment of humour in these otherwise troubled times, but it’s given the editor of every single magazine on the face of the poxy planet another chance to put a great big picture of Tina Fey on their front cover. Again. More than anything, this will probably be Date Night‘s legacy.
Here’s the US weekend box office top five…
1 – Date Night (A sequel to much-loved fruit-based romcom Prune Night. THAT’S RIGHT WE WENT THERE) $27,100,000
2 – Clash Of The Titans (Hey look, it’s Sam Worthington in a dreary-looking effects-heavy action film. What a complete turn-up for the books) $26,875,000
3 – How To Train Your Dragon (We haven’t seen this yet, because we don’t have a dragon that we need to change. Now, if someone would make a film called How To Stop Your Downstairs Neighbour’s Baby From Screaming As Loudly As Is Humanly Possible At Three O’Clock In The Morning Every Night, we’d be all over that) $25,530,000
4 – Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too? (Working title: Tyler Perry Presents Tyler Perry In Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too, Tyler Perry’s Sequel To Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married, Starring Tyler Perry Tyler Perry Tyler Perry Tyler Perry Tyler Perry TYLER PERRY TYLERPERRYTYLERPERRYTYLERPERRYTYLERPERRY) $11,000,000
5 – The Last Song (If only, Miley. If only) $10,000,000
