The Brit Awards, as you may have seen on TV last night, were a phenomenally dull parade of smug back-slapping and extended onstage drum-solos. But Coldplay provided a rare highlight.
Not because of their performance of Square One – listen, if we wanted to watch a skinny man with bad hair wailing and falling down a lot we’d go and visit Crazy Frank at the bus shelter – but because Chris Martin said something along the lines of "Hello, we’re splitting up now, thanks!" Sadly, though, all this talk of a Coldplay split is a big lot of bollocks.
For a band so thuddingly mainstream as Coldplay (CDs), they do seem to have a
good line in sensing public opinion. Because on Wednesday night at The
Brit Awards, Chris Martin accepted Coldplay’s award for Best Video With
A Massive Robot In It (or something) with the words:
"People are fed up with us and so are we. You won’t see us at one of these for many, many years. We mean it."
Great,
everyone thought, surely that means Coldplay are going to split up and
spare us from hearing their meaningless angst-lite music ever again.
But that isn’t the case. A spokesman for Coldplay’s record label put
out the following statement:
"Coldplay are not quitting. They are on
the road until July, when their 16-month X&Y World Tour ends in
Japan. They will then continue working on new material."
So Chris
Martin was having us on. That’s not a real surprise – he once described
the recording of X&Y as like "reinventing the wheel," when he
really meant, "copying the wheel that Pink Floyd made, but in a less good way."
Maybe
Chris meant that Coldplay were going to take a long break before they
released another album, giving the band more time do other things that interest them. That would make the most sense. After all,
those houses aren’t going to exorcise themselves, are they?
