Day two of our look at the British Soap Awards Best Actress betting odds, where we ignore how sexy or pretty or old or weird soap stars are, and concentrate on their acting ability.
Because there's a big difference between the sexiest actress and the best actress. Look at Dawn from Eastenders – sure, she looks nice, but she's compulsively unable to say any words at all without wobbling her head around like the Churchill Insurance dog after a heavy night out.
Here are the British Soap Awards Best Actress betting odds for Ali Bastian, Stirling Gallacher, Charlotte Bellamy and Paula Tilbrook, with help from PaddyPower.com…
Ali Bastian – Ali Bastian plays Becca Dean in Hollyoaks. Ali Bastian doesn't seem to stray much from the very blatant Hollyoaks stereotype of monging about half undressed at every single opportunity, but this isn't why Ali Bastian is up for the British Soap Awards Best Actress award. No, chances are that Ali got a Best Actress nod for the sensitive portrayal of Becca Dean, a woman who is cheating with her husband by having it off with a schoolboy all the time. And since that schoolboy is played by strutting Just The Two Of Us git Chris Fountain, Ali's acting ability can't be underestimated. She doesn't even gag when she kisses him. Current British Soap Awards Best Actress betting odds – 50/1
Stirling Gallacher – Stirling Gallacher plays Dr George Woodson in Doctors. Unless you watch Doctors – and let's face it, you probably don't – you'll know Stirling Gallacher best as David Brent's boss in The Office. But, seeing how that role just involved her looking comically annoyed at Ricky Gervais all the time, you can't really judge her acting ability on that acting job alone. In Doctors, Stirling Gallacher gets to play a ditsy northern doctor who keeps losing things and causes hilarious yet plot-essential mix-ups. But get this – Stirling Gallacher isn't really Northern. That accent she does… it's acting! Give her the best actress award now, we say. Current British Soap Awards Best Actress betting odds – 40/1
Charlotte Bellamy – Charlotte Bellamy plays Laurel Thomas in Emmerdale. Sometimes, an actress doesn't need a story about drug use and being raped and watching her family die in a house fire to stand out as being good. Case in point – Charlotte Bellamy. Charlotte's character Laurel Thomas is a wishy-washy eccentric vicar's wife with pretty much no dramatic point whatsoever, but Charlotte somehow manages to pull it off with unusual flair. Maybe she's a really great actress. Or maybe Charlotte really is a little bit mentally deranged in real life. Who knows? Current British Soap Awards Best Actress betting odds – 33/1
Paula Tilbrook – Paula Tilbrook plays Betty Eagleton in Emmerdale. It's nice when – in the face of giant dramatic, sexy, violent storylines – the Generic Old Lady from a soap opera can get a Best Actress nod. This is the case with Paula Tilbrook. She's a long-serving Emmerdale character who only usually gets to stretch her acting muscles when she goes into a shop to gossip/give recaps on events for stupid viewers. But since the actor who played Seth died, Betty was given the chance to look sad in a few scenes, and that seems to have secured Paula the Best Actress nomination. Current British Soap Awards Best Actress betting odds – 33/1
