Of all the stars of Ghostbusters you'd want Bill Murray to turn up at your party the most, wouldn't you? Bill Murray would be fun, not like boring Egon or Dan Aykroyd, who we'd suspect would eat everything in your cupboards.
And apparently that's what happened over the weekend. Not Dan Aykroyd eating everything – although he really would, wouldn't he? – but Bill Murray turning up at a student house party in Scotland. According to reports, Bill Murray surprised everyone by showing up to a party hosted by a bunch of Scandinavian St Andrews students, drank vodka out of a coffee cup and then washed up before leaving. Presumably after that he travelled around Scotland looking quietly sorrowful as a bunch of My Bloody Valentine songs played in the background, too.
It's always disappointing when you meet an actor who isn't like their screen persona in real life. Imagine how disappointed you'd be, for instance, to meet Arnold Schwarzenegger only for him not to tell you a staggeringly crap one-liner, punch your nose up through your brain and then hurl a steaming metal pipe through your chest. Disappointed, that's how you'd feel. That's why we need to celebrate actors who go out of their way to treat you like you're in one of their films. Actors like Joe Pesci – who apparently beat up a kid when he asked for his autograph – and Bill Murray. Reports are saying that Bill Murray spent much of the weekend behaving exactly like his character in Lost In Translation, as Hollywood.com reports:
The Lost in Translation star accepted an invitation to the party after meeting Norwegian student Lykke Stavnef at a bar in St. Andrews earlier this month. The small Scottish city, which is famous for its world-class golf course, was hosting Murray as part of a celebrity golf tournament. Stavnef says, "Nobody could believe it when I arrived at the party with Bill Murray. We met him in the bar and he made some jokes. He was just like the character in Lost in Translation. "It was really funny because he was pretty old compared with all the other people there, but he was so relaxed and it was really amusing when he started to wash up. Another reveller adds, "He couldn't fail to have a good time. The party was overflowing with stunning Scandinavian blondes. He seemed to be in his element, cracking lots of jokes. It was the talk of the town the next day.”
While a story about Bill Murray – a man most recently famous for being in a film about a lonely man in a strange town partying with young kids – feeling lonely in a strange town and then going to a party with young kids is surprising, we're still a little disappointed. Disappointed that Bill Murray chose his Lost In Translation persona for the gathering instead of his air-guitar playing, booty-shaking, dive-bombing Garfield 2: A Tale Of Two Kitties persona, since that probably would have been funnier.
