I know this happened yesterday, but I was mega exhausted when it happened, so just let me live. Anyway, the biggest power couple that the music industry will ever see, Jay-Z and Beyonce, pulled a total Jay-Z and Beyonce by dropping a surprise joint album, thus completing their trilogy of growth.
In 2016, Beyonce dropped Lemonade, talking about her personal experiences with her relationship with Jay. In 2017, Jay dropped 4:44 to discuss his side of their relationship, now in 2018, they dropped Everything is Love, their joint album to let us know how they’re all good now.
The album is just 9 songs long and is not surprisingly both romantic, political, and embraces and empowers the black American experience. Between Beyonce, Jay, Kendrick Lamar, and Childish Gambino, the music industry has become unashamedly black and I am HERE for it, because for so long so many amazing black musicians steered clear of being “too black” or “too political” for the sake of their career, now we are seeing artists embrace their blackness and their black experience and be praised and it is GLORIOUS.
They dropped the music video for their lead single, Ape Shit, and the entire thing was filmed in the Louvre and is absolutely stunning. Check it out:
Between Childish Gambino, Drake, and now this, I really don’t know what my favorite video of 2018 is going to end up being, and it’s only June! Someone remind me in December to do a list of the best music videos of the year? Maybe that’s what my Christmas Hecklerspray advent will be! SERIOUSLY REMIND ME! I AM SO FORGETFUL NOW THAT I HAVE TWO KIDS!
I can’t say I’m surprised that Beyonce and Jay-Z dropped this album out of nowhere, because that’s kind of their thing, but I’m stoked about it all the same and these two jerks can really do no wrong in my eyes.
All hail the king and queen!
