The definition of psychological projection is: "when someone is threatened by, or afraid of, their own impulses so they attribute these impulses to someone else," which sets this story up rather nicely.
Noel Gallagher, monobrowed 1990s indie rockstar, has lashed out at The Rolling Stones for not understanding that their recent albums aren’t as good as the ones released when they were in their prime. That’s Noel Gallagher – author of one decent album from 12 years ago; Noel Gallagher who threw a shitty fit when Don’t Believe The Truth wasn’t nominated for Best Album at the Brits – worrying about old bands.
Do you want to tell him, or should we?
Noel Gallagher might not have written a decent album since
Definitely Maybe in 1994, favouring either overblown coke-fuelled
wankery (Morning Glory, Be Here Now), or wishy-washy self-parodies
(everything since) instead. But we’ll say this of Noel Gallagher – he gives
good quotes. This is the man who once said:
"Americans are crazy. They have this fascination with throwing their
shoes on stage. I’ve been to a lot of shows in me life, some good and
some bad. But I was never moved to take off me shoes and throw it at
the lead singer."
And now Noel Gallagher has got Super Bowl half-timers The Rolling Stones
in his sights. He’s concerned that The Rolling Stones still think
they’re capable of equalling their best work, as he tells Maxim
Magazine:
"The Stones said that every time they put out an album
they think it’s their best and they can’t understand why people don’t
take the new records as seriously as the old ones. Well, you’re old age
pensioners. By all means make records and go on tour, because if people
want to see you, fine, but don’t expect to be taken seriously. Your
best work is behind you."
Where to start, Noel, where to start. We
could point out that Noel Gallagher has been claiming that every Oasis
album since the first one was the best thing they’ve ever done. We
could suggest that Noel Gallagher might be slightly resentful that The
Rolling Stones can still draw one of the largest concert audiences ever, even though they’re old age pensioners. But we won’t.
Because
all this Noel Gallagher Vs The Rolling Stones stuff is a little bit
1998, and if we start digging that up, then The Manic Street Preachers
might get famous again, and that’s something nobody really wants.

Gallagher blasts ageing Stones quality – BreakingNews
[story by Stuart Heritage]
Andrew Bren says
Ho Ho Ho … dem krazy Stones boys are STILL aggravating the over-25’s.
Andrew says
Well, (WTS)MG was a great album too and their b-sides were fantastic. BHN had some good songs and the new one’s okay.
But yeah, the irony is pretty strong. Oasis would have been better regarded had they broken up in 1996 or even 1998 than they have been for sticking around for another 10 years.
Although to be fair to Noel, he HAS said he has no intention of replicating the Stones and plans to split after a couple more albums.
Joel says
the only difference is… Noel Gallagher is also well known for being extremely honest with his own music. He has said in the past that everything other than DM has been crap. But still, most of what Noel, and even sometimes Liam, says of other bands is true.
Beau says
The bottom line is that The Stones still kick ass as a live act and even though their new album ‘A Bigger Bang’ may not equal their earlier classics like Exile on Main Street or Some Girls, it still rocks.
Maybe Noel is just jealous because he knows that when he’s 62 he’ll just a name in a history book.
jook says
Beau’s comment about that guy, “just being a name in a history book” is amusing. What history book, I wonder. I can’t think of any reason for that guy to appear in any serious history of much of anything other than a collection dedicated to drunken fools. Just my opinion.
fontaine says
Jook. what are you talking about? Oasis is by far the most important band to come out since the Sex Pistols. Look at every new band out there right now and tell me one who hasnt been inspired by Oasis.
Gigi says
Oasis were/are a culturally important band. You can’t deny that they will be remembered, and certainly not only in “a collection dedicated to drunken fools.” Granted, they might be in that as well. DM was such a great album that it would be nearly impossible for anyone who made such a great album to make a better one. It would ahve been one thing if it would have been mediocre and they could never do a better one. Yet, it’s always it’s always listed as one of the top 5 debuts ever. WTSMG is one of the top 3 best selling albums ever in England though. The other albums might not be Definitely Maybes, but they’re still brilliant. Although, even Noel admits BHN was way overproduced.
Joel says
“Although to be fair to Noel, he HAS said he has no intention of replicating the Stones and plans to split after a couple more albums. ”
very true. But he’s been talking about splitting since the Morning Glory Days. Hope they stay for a while more anyway. but whether Noel is there or not, Liam will always be in Oasis, whether it’s still successful or not. Would be interesting to see how the band is if there would be no Noel. But judging by “Turn Up The Sun” by Andy Bell (bassist) and Meaning of Soul by Liam, they would still be a great band im guessing….
Chris Bondy says
Noel wrote some great songs on DM, WTSMG. I also like The Masterplan, which doesn’t get alot of mention by too many people. I don’t mind the rest of their albums either but there’s been a dropoff in song quality since the first two. The true barometer of how Gallaghers feel about their current release, “Don’t Believe the Truth” will be whether they’re playing any of that material on their next tour. If you look at the playlists from their last few tours, most of the material has been from the first two albums and the rest was from the album that was released at the time. I could be wrong but I don’t think they’ve played hardly anything from Be Here Now, Standing on the Shoulder of Giants or The Hindu Times on this recent tour.
Marcus Dickens says
Rolling Stones’ guitarist Ronnie Wood has lambasted his fellow Stones
for preferring bed to partying, according to a report in the Daily Mirror.
Just for the laugh, check out the tracks on ‘Forty Winks’, the apocryphal
new album by the Stones http://www.carrentalzone.com/fortywinks.html
All the best,
Marcus
HRH Adam says
This rag is so anti-Oasis is disgusting. Grow up. Noel Gallagher is a genius, and the last Oasis tour played major venues and sold out in seconds. I don’t think there’s anything to be jealous of, you twit. Every British publication [other than this c*nthouse of course] ranks Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory as the greatest albums of all time, Live Forever, Wonderwall, etc, as the greatest songs of all time, with the stones a distant ranking, after the Beatles et al. Shove off and show some journalistic integrity, because Oasis shows are the real thing, the old stuff, and the new stuff sounding just as good done live…but Stones shows are like a Vegas lounge nostalgia act.
PressPlay2Go says
HRH A mad Adam Wrote: ‘Stones shows are like a Vegas lounge nostalgia act.’I don’t think you’d fit 7.5 million people into a Vegas lounge. Stones have performed in over 2,000 sell out concerts in their career so far.By the time Jagger and Co were 40 years old they’d produced After-Math, Between The Buttons, Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile On Main Street and songs like Satisfaction, Paint It Black, Jumping Jack Flash, She’s A Rainbow, Sympathy For The Devil, Street Fighting Man, Honky Tonk Woman, Gimme Shelter, You Can’t Alway Get What You Want, Brown Sugar, Tumbling Dice, ,,,,
nostromo says
90% of the rock-music loving population would soon forget the very existence of Oasis and Noel Gallaher if he didn’t occasionally come up with some outlandish statement (such as this) to generate publicity. It goes without saying that the Stones dont require anything of the kind….they’re true legends and long may they roll.
BlenderPea says
Stones will be listened to for ever.
bill says
oasis sucks ass
thephoenix says
oasis is a semi goodish band but there’s no real comparison between them and the stones…the stones are a legend that defined a genre, oasis consists of two weird brothers that don’t get along very well with anyone on the planet including each other, if they didn’t come up with these delusional little golden nuggets from time to time no one would remember who they were
Edward says
You are such a rubbish writer. That was a terrible article. You’re so cynical. You must have a small knob, knobhead!
niebell says
oasis is great band. hands down. Noel Gallagher even never cares about twats who said he’s knobhead or whatever you call him.
??? says
Oasis are a local band. Step out of Britain and NOBODY will know who Oasis are – because they are just a creation of the powerful British hype-machine. Oasis were the greatest band in the world for about 2 years, and that’s it.
The Rolling Stones compete with The Beatles for the title of greatest band of all time. Oasis wouldn’t crack the Top 30 by most music critics.
Besides, Oasis lasted 2 albums, maybe 3. The Rolling Stones remained an actively relevant band for about 2 decades. Noel Gallagher is the only person in the world (except for blind dumb Oasis fans) who see himself as anything close to a genius.
Every Oasis song sounds the same. Truly genius…
??? says
The only place were Oasis were relevant was Britain. And whether their impact and influence was positive is highly questionable – many say that they contributed to absolutely isolated Britain from the rest of the world when the country was always a leading nation when it came to Pop culture.
In the grand scheme of things, WORDLWIDE, Oasis have no cultural relevance whatsoever. That’s just a fact.
Rach says
Say what you like about NG and The Stones, but don’t insult Manic Street Preachers!
