If rumours were to be believed, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were supposed to be having a giant romantic wedding round George Clooney’s gaff on the shores of Lake Como this weekend.
However, somewhat predictably, neither Brad Pitt nor Angelina Jolie got married to anyone over the weekend, and certainly not anywhere near George Clooney’s house. Which is good news for the Italian villagers who decided to bump up their prices to fleece gullible journalists, and good news for Jennifer Aniston who won’t have to do a tear-flecked interview about how sad she is now that Brad and Angelina are married. And it’s bad news for… probably nobody, actually.
Brad Pitt (DVDs) and Angelina Jolie seem to be trying to set a new record
for not getting married more times than anyone else. There was the Pitt-Jolie wedding that didn’t happen last year at Lake Como, the Pitt-Jolie Buddhist wedding that also didn’t take place and now Brad and Angelina can add their no-show at Lake Como this weekend to the list. Not that this latest ruse wasn’t perfectly set-up, though.
On Friday, the little Italian village of Cernobbio was braced for
all kinds of Brad Pitt/ Angelina Jolie lunacy to unfold. The mayor of
the village had been put on standby in case there was suddenly a celebrity
wedding to attend, the owner of a local luxury hotel had prepared
everything in case Brad and Angelina dropped by and decided to get
married on the spur of the moment and extra police officers were said to
have been drafted in to hold back the expected tidal wave of sobbing
Pitt-Jolie fans.
But then nothing happened. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie maybe decided that they wanted to visit a new dinosaur museum
instead of getting married – whatever their reasoning, they didn’t show
up in Cernobbio. That didn’t stop a George Clooney lookalike – or two
men dressed up as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie – from wandering around
the town kissing each other willy nilly.
It also didn’t stop all the assembled journalists from the world’s
media organisations feeling that they’d all been slightly had by a
giant publicity stunt started by the people of Cernobbio to draw
attention to their lovely little village. By hiking up prices for
helicopter tours, boat trips and hotels, it’s thought that the village
may have made £1 million from all the visitors eager to catch a glimpse
of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie together.
Which is ridiculous, really, when everyone knows that Brad Pitt and
Angelina Jolie are actually going to get married tomorrow at the
hecklerspray office. And you’re all invited. £50 entry.
