In my humble opinion (who am I? Angela Chase?), 2013 was a great year for film and it saw some amazing people become household names (Jennifer Lawrence, anybody?). So I got to thinking, who might be a household name this time next year? Who are we going to become so obsessed with that we might actually start writing about them on here so I can stop writing about Miley and the damn Kardashians?
So, I compiled a list of 10 people I think are going to have really big, break out years in 2014. Some of these people you know, hell they’ve been around for years, but they’re not exactly household names or big stars, they’re more so “oh come on, you know, that guy that’s in that show and was in that movie?” or “you know, that girl who was pregnant on that ABC Spark show? What’s her name?” And some of these people you may not know at all, but let’s have a look at them, shall we?
Elizabeth Olsen
Elizabeth Olsen isn’t new. She’s been around for a couple of years, and some might say she had her breakout role in 2012 with her stunning performance in?Martha Marcy May Marlene,?and I couldn’t agree more. That was definitely the moment when people realized she wasn’t just the little sister of the fame Olsen Twins and that she was a talented hot babe in her own right, but she hasn’t really done anything stand out since. She’s definitely not a household name. However, she ended her year with the remake of the Korean cult hit Oldboy, the fantastic Allen Ginsberg biopic, Kill Your Darlings, plus several other critical acclaimed indies, and now, in the 2014, she is set to star in the new Godzilla film and the new The Avengers sequel. ?I’d say by 2-15 she will be known as way more than just the younger Olsen twin who showed her boobs in that weird indie movie a lot of people didn’t really get.
Rosamund Pike
Rosamund Pike is one of those actresses who has been around for fucking ever (she was a Bond girl for Christ’s sake!), yet no one ever seems to remember her name, but I have a feeling that this year that will all change for ol’ Pikey. Rosamund is set to star as Amy in the film adaptation of the critically acclaimed best seller, Gone Girl. The movie is being directed by David Fincher and co-stars Ben Affleck and I have a feeling it is going to be HUGE. If you haven’t read the book (you should because it is fucking amazing!!!), then let me just tell you that the role of Amy is the type that could completely make a career if it’s done right. Though rumors swirled that Reese Witherspoon would be cast (which I thought would actually be perfect casting because I’ve always suspected that Reese was a secretly insane Type-A control freak), the role went to Rosamund, and if she pulls it off, I smell an Oscar Nomination.
Dane DeHaan
Dane DeHaan is one of the newer comes on the list, and let me tell you I am excited about this kid! First off, have you seen Places Beyond the Pines? Let me tell you, it drags on for fucking ever and is emotionally exhausting and stressful and not even that fucking good, but Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper do top notch jobs in it, I’ll give them that. The movie ends 45 minutes after it should, but the only reason I was willing to accept that was because it gave us 45 solid minutes of Dane DeHaan. The fact that I walked away from a Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper movie thinking “that kid at the end is going to be big” says a lot. Dane recently starred in Kill Your Darlings with Elizabeth Olsen and Daniel Radcliffe, and is set to play Harry Osborn in the new The Amazing Spiderman movie. He’s got a few other movies lined up, and I’m pumped to see how many more scenes he steals.
Oscar Isaac
Oscar Isaac is another actor who I first noticed in a Ryan Gosling movie. Isaac played a supporting role in what I consider to be the best movie of 2011, Drive. Though his roll was small, he held his own along side the insanely sexy and talented, Ryan Gosling. He’s had a ton of great supporting roles, but it wasn’t until his lead in this years new movie by the Coen brother,?Inside Llewyn Davis, that people started to say “fuck, this guy has a lot of talent.” A lot of people are saying he’s going to get an Oscar nod for his incredible performance (he’s already nominated for a Golden Globe, Independent Spirit Award, New York Film Critics Award, and a million more), AND he’s set to star in an erotic thriller, In Secret, with Elizabeth Olsen this year (see, that girl is going to be everywhere!). I think 2014 is going to be a great year for Mr. Isaac.
Margot Robbie
Margot Robbie was a big surprise for me. When I first saw her I did the whole stupid “judge a book by it’s cover” shit and just assumed she would be a sexy Emma Stone who would always play the hot wife or girlfriend. However, her performance in The Wolf of Wall Street was actually really great and gave depth to a character who could’ve been very one dimensional. The Australian actress pulls off a flawless New York accent and easily holds her own against A-List super star, Leonardo DiCaprio. AND SHE’S ONLY 23!!! She’s got three films coming up in 2014 and I’m hoping to see a lot more of her (in films that is…I already saw her totally naked in The Wold of Wall Street. And might I say daaaayyyyummmm girl!)
Shailene Woodley
Shailene Woodley first came on the scene back in 2008 when she starred as a pregnant fifteen-year-old on the ABC Family show, The Secret Life of the American Teenager. The show was super fucking ridiculous, but it lasted until 2013, so I guess some people liked it. In 2011, she made her film debut along side George Clooney in the critically acclaimed film, The Descendants, for which she was nominated for a ton of awards. The end of 2013, she starred in the amazing The Spectacular Now, with up and comer Miles Teller, and in 2014 she’s set to star in three highly anticipated films (The Fault in Our Stars, White Bird in a Blizzard, and, of course, Divergent, which is set to be the next Hunger Games). She’s got movies that are set to be teen hits, and a movie that looks like Oscar bait, so I think that Shailene probably has a great year ahead of herself.
Chris Pratt
I know, I know, Chris Pratt has been around for like EVER, however, he is definitely NOT a household name. However, this year, he is featured in the critically acclaimed film Her, is the lead voice actor in the highly anticipated Lego Movie, and will star in the sure-to-be blockbuster Marvel movie Guardians of the Galaxy. I doubt it won’t be much longer until Pratt finally gets the credit he is due.
Miles Teller
I am allllll about Miles Teller. I think he’s got a very sharp, young Vince Vaughn style humor which I really dig, and I think he steals every movie he is in. Last year, he and Shailene Woodley won Sundance awards for their performances in The Spectacular Now, and he’s also featured in Divergent as well as the new Zac Efron movie, That Awkward Moment.?He’s funny, he’s talented, he’s awkwardly handsome, and he’s got some huge rolls this year. Teller is definitely on my “One’s to Watch” list.
Joel Kinnaman
A lot of people don’t know who Joel Kinnaman is and that is straight up disgusting. Have you watched The Killing?! Go watch season 3 of The Killing right now! It’s on Netflix! You don’t need to see the first two seasons to enjoy it or follow it, so seriously, do it! Best crime drama on tv and Kinnaman kills it as Detective Stephen Holder and man oh man is he fine. In 2014, Kinnaman is starring in the new Robocop movie which actually looks pretty badass. I imagine that after Robocop comes out, I won’t be the only lady lusting after this Swedish hunk (yes, I said hunk. No, I am not 45).
Douglas Booth
Douglas Booth was recently linked to Taylor Swift so you KNOOOOOW 2014 is going to be a big year for him.?In 2013, Booth starred in Carlo Carlei’s film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. In 2014, he will appear in Darren Aronofsky’s Noah, The Wachowskis’ Jupiter Ascending and Lone Scherfig’s Posh. So, needless to say, this 21-year-old British actor has got a pretty huge year ahead of him. Plus, can you imagine all the moody songs Swifty is going to write about this guy?! Here comes world wide fame!!!
