The MTV Video Music Awards are tomorrow, so I’ve been celebrating it by posting some sweet lists to relive its rich cultural history. Yesterday I looked at some of the best vma outfits, today I’m going to take a walk down memory lane and remind you all of some of my favorite vma moments.
So while Drake is busy taking out billboards to celebrate Rihanna’s Vanguard award at this year’s ceremony (what’s the deal with their relationship?! Will we ever get the truth??), I’m going to force some of my favorite MTV memories on you.
In no specific order…
- Britney Spears’ entire existence at the VMAs: her epic 2001 performance of Oops I did it again, when she danced with a snake to Slave 4 U in 2002, when she kissed Madonna in 2004 (so did Christina Aguilera, but no one cared), and her disaster of a comeback performance in 2007. Everything Britney has done on the VMA stage has been legendary.
2. When Beyonce revealed she was pregnant with Blue Ivy at the end of her Love On Top performance.
3. In 1995, when a SHOCKINGLY drunk Courtney Love crashed Madonna’s red carpet interview.
4. When forever goddess Fiona Apple used her acceptance speech to go on a rant and declare that the world was bullshit.
5. That INSANELY awkward kiss between Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie.
6. In 1992 when Nirvana wanted to play Rape Me, MTV wanted them to play Smells Like Teen Spirit, they compromised with Lithium, Kurt still sang some lyrics to Rape Me, Krist threw his bass I the air and it came crashing down on his head giving him a concussion, and Dave Grohl finished it off by getting on the mic to trash talk Guns N’ Roses. 90’s rock and roll at its finest.
7. When Madonna went SUPER old school for her performance of Vogue, corset, powdered wig and all.
8. When Diana Ross couldn’t help but give Lil Kim’s exposed boob a pat.
9. When Rage Against the Machine member, Tim Commerford, stormed (and climbed) the stage in protest when Limp Bizkit beat them out for Best Rock Video (can’t say I blame him).
10. When Kanye West famously said he’d let Taylor Swift finish her Best Female Video acceptance speech after he announced that Beyoncé’s Single Ladies was one of the greatest videos of ALL TIME.
