Hell hath no fury like a narky Italian fashion designer.
Valentino Garavani regularly gets upset when he sees the ugliness of the world. Especially the very specific ugliness of Cameron Diaz and Julia Roberts. "They look like bag ladies, like homeless people," he recently told a German newspaper.
That’s unfair. A spotty S&M model and a grinning horse, maybe, but homeless?
Valentino told the Die Zeit newspaper:
"Today
you see Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz running
around looking unkempt in jogging trousers, they look like bag ladies,
like homeless people. In the past you never saw that. In the past,
actresses had to commit in their contracts to appear in public like
stars when they left their homes."
You
didn’t get this shocking lapse of standards in his day. Valentino used
to dress shimmering glamour-pusses like Sophia Loren and Jackie Onassis
day and night. And he thinks they looked much better for it. Back then,
"women had less to do and
looked after their appearance. They changed their outfits two or three
times a day or had a complicated hairstyle."
Cameron Diaz and Julia Roberts – who wore a Valentino dress when she
won her Oscar for Erin Brockovich – shouldn’t be too upset. Because it
seems like fashion is quickly becoming Valentino’s secondary occupation, after
being all waspy about famous people. According to him, Paris Hilton is
"vulgar" and "not even pretty", while Lindsay Lohan "makes me so
uncomfortable."
And anyway, what’s wrong with looking a bit homeless? There’s a
homeless bloke around these parts who is never seen without his giant
bishop’s hat and scabby little Bontempi keyboard. And that look is so
hot right now.
