Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie doing a bunch of charitable stuff isn't really news, since that's how they seems to spend at least 22 hours of each day, probably leaving the other two for arguing and thinking up more stupid baby names in.
But when Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie decide to help out charitable causes by moving away from just showing up in Africa, looking sad in front of some orphans and then claiming one for their own, and actually handing over a million dollars of their own money each to a charity of their choice, for no other reason than they just felt like it and maybe to get people to go and see Babel when it comes out as well, then that's news. To some extent at least.
This probably isn't the sort of news that Jennifer Aniston wants to hear – and, let's face it, apart from the headline Brad Pitt's Face All Burnt Up In A Nasty Chip Pan Fire, Last Words "I Love Jennifer" what does she want to hear? – but Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt seem to bring the best out of each other.
For a start, the Jolie-Pitt clan of Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Maddox, Zahara and Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt are already the most beautiful family on Earth, and Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie always appear to be there for each other no matter who is trying to steal their images or say that they've split up or calls them both "colonial overlords" for the way they treated Namibia while Angelina Jolie was giving birth to Shiloh Nouvel. And then there's all that humanitarianism.
Angelina Jolie has always been a lovely big humanitarian, and has never so much as thought twice before adopting a refugee or two in the name of saving the world, and she's dragging Brad Pitt up to her level, too – by rebuilding New Orleans, Brad Pitt was recently named as a great American. Together, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are like a giant steamroller of goodness, saving the world and helping the gays wherever and whenever they can. And now Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are putting their money where their mouths are, by setting up the Jolie/Pitt Foundation – a new charitable foundation to help humanitarian causes around the world, and Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have started by giving a million dollars away to both Global Action For Children and Doctors Without Borders. Jolie/Pitt slave Trevor Neilson says:
"Angelina and Brad are committed to using their resources to help the world's most vulnerable people. These two organisations are focusing on crises that receive far too little attention and Angelina and Brad are happy to do their part to help."
Jennifer Delaney of Global Action For Children is pleased with the Jolie/Pitt cash injection, too:
"Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt not only care, but more important, are taking concrete action to address the fact that there will be 20 million children orphaned by AIDS by 2010, and millions more orphaned by tuberculosis, malaria and conflict or whose parents are sick and dying."
We can't help wondering if Brad Pitt's million dollars has come from an advance of the $40 million he's rumoured to be getting for starring in Mission: Impossible IV. And, yes, we know that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's $2 million is 87.5% smaller than the giant donation George Lucas gave to USC yesterday to help people make films as good as The Phantom Menace, but – hey – a start's a start.
