In 2005, Tom Cruise changed in the eyes of the public. He started the year as a tiny, slightly irritating film star with a slightly inflated sense of self-worth. But as the year went on, Tom Cruise went all out.
By jumping around on a sofa, openly insulting Brooke Shields, getting squirted in the face, proposing to Katie Holmes, getting her and then buying a machine to spy on their unborn tot, Tom Cruise has stamped his name in history. He’s been voted the most irritating film star of the last 16 years in a recent survey.
Make no mistake, second best isn’t part of Tom Cruise’s (DVDs) vocabulary.
Whatever he wants, he’ll go out and accomplish. He wanted to be a giant
film star – and by starring in monster hits like Top Gun, Days Of
Thunder, Jerry Maguire and The Last Samurai, that’s what he became.
10,000 readers of Empire magazine voted him the biggest movie star of
all time in an online poll.
But that’s not enough for Tom Cruise. Not only was he voted biggest movie star, he got the nod as the most irritating film star of the last 16 years, too, for his breathtaking displays of irregular behaviour over the course of last year. Highlights of 2005 included Tom Cruise spazzing about on Oprah’s sofa, spazzing out after pranksters squirted water into his face at a premiere, spazzing out everyone’s ears by telling everyone how much he loved Katie Holmes a billion times a second, and annoying both the American Psychiatric Association and the American College Of Radiology by just generally being a bit spazzy.
Other, less interesting winners in the Empire poll included Kate Winslet being named best actress, Kevin Spacey being titled best actor and Steven Spielberg given the best director nod.

Journalists are the most irritating and trouble-making people on earth; after psychiatry of course!
Jesse Reuben Wilson says
Err … I think this is grossly pushed out of perspective.
Tom Cruise is respected and admired by millions hence being the biggest movie star on the planet.
To receive such unfair criticism over such small things is just SO ridiculous – all he did was express his love for a woman on a TV show.
This is just another boring standard media attack to create more sensationalism.
