We’ll admit it: X Factor is sucking us in. And we’re not sure why.
By now, we should be used to the score - a great big hall gets filled up with frighteningly ambitious and deluded wannabes, they sing in front of a panel of deliberately cruel judges, most of them are rubbish, the judges pull surprised faces and slag them off, then Kate Thornton hugs them. Repeat a million times and that’s X Factor. And Pop Idol. And American Idol. And it never gets old.
Maybe because ITV show it three times in the space of 24 hours, our brains are being pummelled into submission. Who knows? Anyway, we’ve decided that the only way to balance out our self-hate for enjoying the show is to place bets on the result. That way, at least we have a reason to watch.
So to start off, we’ll look at the betting odds in the Winning Manager market, with some help from Betfair.com…
Simon Cowell - Nasty old high-trousered pantomime villain Simon
Cowell is the Daddy of these humiliation-based talent shows. Without
him pulling faces and calling the contestants wankers and whores, the
shows wouldn’t stand a chance. However, as much as managing artists
goes, he’s simply not that good. His technique is as old as time: make
the first release a cover version of an old classic, then pump out the
ballads until everyone loses interest. Then dump the artist and move
onto the next one. People are tired of this approach, and that’s why
Simon’s least favourite to win. Current odds - 17/9
Louis Walsh - Louis, on the other hand, is actually a pretty good
manager. Let’s face it - anyone that can make stars out of Westlife and
Girls Aloud knows pretty much what he’s doing. However, as a judge on a
talent show, he sucks. He can’t seem to decide if he’s Mr Mean or Mr
Giggle Like A Schoolgirl. And he’s not very charismatic. And he looks a
bit like a stale dumpling. His act will probably sell more records than
anyone else, but will he win? The betting public are undecided. Current
odds - 15/8
Sharon Osbourne - Sharon has some kind of split personality thing
going on. On one hand, she’s the smiling, bum-slapping Asda lady who
calls old ladies sweetheart and hugs bad singers, but on the other
hand, she’s the hard-faced businesswoman that messed about with Iron
Maiden’s sound at a recent concert because they were saying bad things
about her husband. What’s our point? We’re not entirely sure, but she’s
the favourite anyway. Current odds - 11/6
We’ll update these odds during the series of X Factor. But if you want to find out how the odds stand at any moment in time, head over to the UK TV Special Bets section of Betfair.com. You get free stuff when you join up, look…
