Saturday's X Factor broke new boundaries for the show, in that Louis Walsh actually lost his rag and chucked a glass of water. So what if it was more scripted than an episode of Byker Grove, it was still mildly entertaining.

While we're still hoping that this sort of behaviour spirals out of control until the X Factor judges get equipped with a selection of Mr Burns-style elimination buttons to get rid of lousy X Factor contestants with trapdoors or fleets of winged monkeys, it was also a mirror to last year's X Factor, where Sharon Osbourne threw a glass of water over Louis Walsh's head. Surely that sort of thing couldn't happen again… could it?

You don't get to be the brains behind Britain and America's biggest reality TV shows – or have teeth so dazzlingly white – by being thick. So Simon Cowell knows that the last thing X Factor viewers want is a dull retread of last year's series. That means no joke Moroccan goatherds becoming unexplainably famous, no weird Irishmen jerking about singing 1950s rock and roll songs while dancing like a million electrified fishhooks have been plunged through his genitals and – most importantly – it means that Sharon Osbourne doesn't get to chuck a glass of water over Louis Walsh in a weirdly unspontaneous moment of scripted-seeming fury. It's old, it's been done before and – unless Louis Walsh decides to stop shitting on the dreams of attention-hungry teenagers for long enough to mention that, yes, he watched The Sharon Osbourne Show one afternoon and, yes, in retrospect he'd have rather slit off his nipples with broken syringe glass – we can't see it happening again. But don't worry, if Sharon Osbourne wants to throw stuff over people, there's always Kate Thornton. Just so long as she leaves us enough time to switch her glass of water for an industrial-sized aquarium full of acid. Current X Factor betting odds – 6/1
