Village People Cop Pleads No Contest For Being Druggy
Of all the members of the Village People you'd expect to be in court on drugs charges, your first choices would probably be the cowboy or the sailor, one of the ones with a disrespectful career like that. But the Village People cop? On drugs?!
Sadly, that's the case. Victor Willis, the original Village People policeman, is in court on drugs charges stemming from his arrest in March. And Victor Willis has pleaded no contest to the charges, which is hardly surprising since the police claim they found all kinds of cocaine and drugs paraphernalia in the car. The real police, that it, not the Village People police. Oh, this is going to get confusing, isn't it?
In retrospect, it's not surprise that one of the Village People went off the rails. We fly into a lengthy, unstoppable rage every time we hear YMCA, so just imagine what having to sing it all the time would do to you. Whether that's the reason why Victor Willis is in court on drugs charges is slightly more unclear, but that's where he is.
Back in March, original Village People member Victor Willis was arrested in San Francisco, after a routine traffic stop apparently revealed that he was keeping a bunch of drugs in his car. And that he'd been on the run for skipping sentencing during another drugs and guns trial. And not even giving the police a false name could stop Victor Willis from getting his wrists slapped.
Since the arrest, Victor Willis has been undergoing in-custody substance abuse treatment in California, a move which is thought to reduce the likelihood of Victor too much time in jail. After pleading no contest to the charges in court yesterday, San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Mark Forcum told Willis:
"You need to deal with your addiction in a way that you haven't done before."
Since Victor Willis pleaded no contest to the charges, he will either be sentenced to a two-year prison term or a suspended three-year, eight-month prison term – and six months in jail – on the condition that he complete a residential drug treatment program. He'll be sentenced in September.
Victor Willis should be able to cope well if he's eventually given a prison sentence, though. Any fears he has of getting intimidated by the inmates should be allayed by the fact that a) he's a policeman and b) he was in a gay beat combo for a while.
