Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion Drags Up US Weekend Box Office Chart

There are a few dead-cert ways to US weekend box office success: making a stupid film all about explosions, making a serious film all about important issues, or just dressing up like a fat lady.
After Mrs Doubtfire, Big Momma’s House and Big Momma’s House 2 all reached the top of the US weekend box office, other young upstarts are starting to crack onto the idea. Upstarts like Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion – a film about a man dressed up as a sassy fat old woman – which has entered the US weekend box office at number one. We’re not sure why – it looks like a bag of cack.
An easy way to describe Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion would be to call it the dark side of Big Momma’s House. Where Martin Lawrence (DVDs) seems content to dress up as a woman in order to ogle nude girls and have hot stones dropped on his arse, Tyler Perry does the same in order to make wry remarks about abusive relationships and other melodrama. We’d have thought that Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion would be about as attractive as dipping your knackers into a box of mousetraps, but it’s top of the US weekend box office, so what do we know? Here’s the top ten…
1 - Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion (A black man dresses up as
a hilarious woman – wait a minute, that sounds a lot like another
recently popular movie. Yes! It’s a Munich rip-off) $30,250,000
2 - Eight Below (You don’t think that a film about dogs can be
emotional? Go tell Lionel Blair – he’s been crying on TV for weeks
about his dog) $15,722,000
3 – The Pink Panther (Steve Martin makes films in a cycle. Now he’s
done a good, self-written film like Shopgirl and Bowfinger, followed by
a comedy remake like Bilko and The Pink Panther, he’s due to make 158
unfunny pieces of family shit before he starts all over again) $11,300,000
4 - Date Movie (Now that Scary Movie and Date Movie have been made,
what can the production team do next? How about Funny Movie, just for a change?) $9,225,000
5 - Curious George (Other films may have done better than Curious George recently, but do they have their own soundtrack album by Jack Johnson? No they don’t. Is that a good or a bad thing? We’re not so sure) $7,005,000
6 - Firewall (The most generic film of all time ever, according to this bloke we met) $6,280,000
7 - Final Destination 3 (Featuring minor language, slightly
excessive product placement and scenes of a woman shooting a nailgun
repeatedly through the back of her head so that the nails stab through
her eyes) $5,350,000
8 - Doogal (Yeah, you guessed it. This is the The Magic Roundabout, but
jiggled about so that more famous people get to do the voices. Poor
Robbie Williams – he can’t even crack America in films about cartoon dogs) $3,609,000
9 – Running Scared (We seem to have woken up in a strange parallel
universe where Paul Walker has two films in the US weekend box office
chart. He’s the most famous man in the world! What’s going on?) $3,075,000
10 - Freedomland (Has anyone actually seen this? Is it a racial drama or a film about ghost-babies? We can’t figure it out) $2,900,000

[story by Stuart Heritage]

You could not be further from the truth. Tyler Perry started out on the stage doing plays about Madea. It may not have been before Mrs. Doubfire, but it surely was before Big Mamma’s house. Anyway, the story line to the movie was more that a man in woman’s clothing. It had to do family, forgiveness, true love, knowing when to leave a bad relationship, having your family there to pickup the pieces, healing between mother and daughter. Instead focusing on how the character looked, you should have focused on the meaning behind, who Madea was. She was the rock of the family, she was woman to who didn’t take any stuff. You see it takes strength to be head of family, and if you didn’t see that meaning behind everything, then I feel sorry for you.
I really enjoyed the movie. There are 2 ways to look at this .
Wordly~ If you want to be entertained as the world lives, then you may not see this as a good movie. You may not be in the mood to focus on the issues that Tyler has to offer.
But……
Spiritually~ If you want to work on some of the issues that went on in your family or maybe you are having now, this is the movie for you. This movie is about PEOPLE, and our issues.
There is room in your life to see movies like Spiderman, Mission Impossible, but Madea is a movie about dealing with issues. There is a time a place for everything.
BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
I just hope that people are saying that it is not a good movie for them in their lives right now, because they are not up to dealing with their issues, than to say that it wasnt a good movie. Because somewhere down the rode in your life, these same issues WILL BE BACK!
PLEASE BELIEVE IT
Lacrease
Bernadette,
Big Momma’s House was filmed in 1999, and written several years earlier than the Madea plays. (2001)
Personally, I did’t care for the movie, although my brother could be a walking billboard for it.
Watching Tyler Perry makes me think of Robert Townsend’s movie Hollywood Shuffle. Townsend’s movie highlighted the stereotypical roles assigned to Black people by Hollywood casting directors. The large, sassy,all-knowing, mammy role has been around for over 70 years. The difference today is that there are men playing the role.
