So, as you might have been able to tell from my recent posts, I’m kind of jazzed about tonight’s MTV Video Music Awards. This is not a common thing. From the years 1995 – 2004, I was definitely always jazzed for them, but then I kind of got over it. In fact, the last time I was pumped for a VMAs was 2007 when Britney Spears gave her HORRIFIC ‘comeback’ performance.
I have not been excited for a VMAs until now. After 9 years of so-so shit, where the most interesting thing to happen on the VMAs stage was a drunk Kanye West snatching the mic from Taylor Swift, tonight’s VMAs has the potential to be legendary. Let me explain why.
First and foremost, this years nominees for Video of the Year are the best I have seen since 1998 when the nominees were Puff Daddy and the family’s All About the Benjamins (Rock Remix), The Verve’s Bittersweet Symphony, Madonna’s Ray of Light, Will Smith’s Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It, and Brandy and Monica’s The Boy is Mine. WHAT A YEAR!
Last year, Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood won Video of the Year, which was bullshit because that song is awful and the video is just a roll call of all her famous friends. And I’m not just saying that because I hate Taylor Swift. If Shake it Off or Blank Space had won best video I would’ve been like ‘Yeah, those were deece songs and really well done videos’, but Bad Blood was really just awful. But anyway, this year every single nominee is epic and deserving.
All five of these videos were heavily talked about and spawned a million memes and Instagram posts. We have Adele’s comeback video for her major hit, Hello. We have Drake’s iconic dancing in Hotline Bling. We have Justin Bieber’s Bieberless but insanely choreographed, Sorry. We have Kanye West’s controversial and genius/crazy, Famous. And, saving (imho) the best for last, we have Beyoncé’s ground-breaking Formation. While I obviously think Beyoncé should win, I really really liked all of these videos and think they’re really above and beyond, especially Hotline Bling, Famous and Formation. These are 3 videos that people really couldn’t stop talking about and it’s cool to see MTV nominating so many legitimately deserving videos.
Second, Britney Spears is performing for the first time since her 2007 mid-breakdown performance. As I stated in yesterday’s blog about the 10 best VMA moments, every time Britney Spears performs on the MTV VMA stage it goes down as legendary, so good or bad (I’m REALLY hoping good), tonight is going to be epic while she’s on that stage.
Third, MTV is giving Kanye fucking West FOUR minutes to do whatever the hell he wants. Maybe he’ll rap Famous and then pull a Sinead O’Connor on SNL, but instead of ripping up a picture of the Pope he’ll rip up a picture of Taylor Swift (I would literally die then and there if he did that. Not because I’d love it so much, but because it would prove that I’m psychic and I don’t think I can live with all that power). OR he’ll rap Famous, but instead of Rihanna singing her part in the song, Taylor fucking Swift comes out and sings it! We all know she’s in New York but is not attending the ceremony, nor is she nominated. OR SO WE THINK. Now THAT would be epic.
Fourth, and finally, we’ve been speculating the relationship between Drake and Rihanna for YEARS, but all this year they’ve seemed closer than ever. Rihanna will be accepting the Vanguard Award this year, and to congratulate her, Drake took out a fucking billboard in LA. Rihanna posted a pic of the billboard on Instagram with the caption ‘When he extra’ with a heart and trophy emoji. They’ll both be at the awards show, and I’m thinking that maybe tonight is the night they go public with their relationship. Is there a chance they’ll walk the red carpet together?! I can hope!
Anyway, between all of these things and the 20 million awards Beyoncé is nominated for, I think tonight’s show has the potential to be one for the books and I will 100% be tuning in and blogging about anything cool that happens, so stay tuned!

Okay hold on.. Bad Blood was epic!! Also, since Taylor won’t be there, I hope Kanye is an adult about it and keeps his performance about HIM and not HER.
