The Sex Pistols: Now Recording Videogame Soundtracks

Sex Pistols Reform videogame guitar hero Anarchy In The UKThe Sex Pistols are one of the most important bands in history, thanks to the way they tore up the establishment by looking a bit dirty, saying the word 'rotter' on the telly and inspiring a film that Courtney Love had a bit-part in once.

And, following the grand tradition of bands reforming to kick away any semblance of credibility they may have originally built up, The Sex Pistols have decided to reform. Only, being The Sex Pistols, they're back to kick away any credibility they left the last time they reformed which, in turn, is when they tried to kick away any credibility from the first time they reformed. Yup, the third Sex Pistols reunion in little over a decade is being marked by The Sex Pistols giving us something really special. That's right, a new version of Anarchy In The UK that'll be used on a computer game. That's good news – it means we shouldn't have long to wait before The Sex Pistols finally re-record Holiday In The Sun to include a new verse about the low low last-minute prices on autumn weekday family breaks currently being offered by Haven caravan parks nationwide.

There are basically two types of band reunions – reunions where the band genuinely feels that it still has something relevant to say to the legions of rabid fans clamouring for their return, and reunions like the current Sex Pistols reunion where, basically, four versions of your Dad try to educate the youth on how things were done in their day, only to dislocate their hip trying to play their leg like a guitar and hobble off for a nice cup of tea.

As young punk firebrands in the late 1970s, The Sex Pistols arguably created one of pop music's first generation gaps by playing simple music loudly and spitting a lot. And then they split up to bask in the legacy they'd created for themselves. In the intervening years, the members of The Sex Pistols all found different ways to pass the time, be it by either drumming for Edwyn Collins, becoming a professional British ex-pat, being in a band better than The Sex Pistols then wanking away all the goodwill on a celebrity reality show or murdering their girlfriends and then killing themselves.

And then The Sex Pistols came back in 1996 and it was exciting. And then The Sex Pistols came back in 2003 and it was less exciting. And now The Sex Pistols have come back again and hardly anyone could give even a fraction of a toss if they're being honest. But this time is different, because this time The Sex Pistols are recording songs for videogames. NME reports:

Sex Pistols have re-recorded their classic hit 'Anarchy In The UK' for use in the upcoming video game 'Guitar Hero III: Legends Of Rock'. It marks the first time members John Lydon, guitarist Steve Jones and drummer Paul Cook have been together in a studio since the late 1970s, reports Billboard. The recording session took place at Air Studios, London, with producer Chris Thomas. Guitarist Steve Jones enthused, "I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out, but it actually turned out great and I think everyone held their own." He added, "I like ['Guitar Hero'] because my friends' kids like it. And I like what kids like."

But that's The Sex Pistols – in their world the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame is bad, but cynically stamping all over the reasons why people used to like them in the first place by re-recording their old songs and selling them off to play in the background of a videogame is good. But, as bad as yet another Sex Pistols reunion is, at least we can all agree that it's not as bad as if they'd recorded new songs and pretended that they weren't just a touring nostalgic curiosity kept alive by misty-eyed 45-year-old bank managers.

If we all ignore them, maybe they'll realise they're missing Countdown and go home again.

It’s better to burn out than it is to rust, Mr. Lydon.
