The Gays Love Charlize Theron
Then buzz it up

There have been many inspirational figures for the gay and lesbian in the media over the last year. There were the Brokeback Mountain boys, for instance, and that hot lesbian three-way that got cut from Basic Instinct 2.
But the biggest inspiration for gay and lesbian people over the course of the last year - according to gay organisation GLAAD - was none other than Charlize Theron. Why did Charlize Theron win the GLAAD Vanguard award? Well, it was either because of her vociferous lobbying for gay marriage to be legally recognised in America, or because she totally looked hot covered in dirt in the poster for North Country. We forget which.
What is it with GLAAD media awards these days? Less than a fortnight ago, Brokeback Mountain inevitably won the Outstanding Motion Picture In Wide Release prize at another GLAAD Media Awards ceremony. And, now the world has come to terms with the highest-profile gay movie winning a gay award, another GLAAD Media Awards has taken place, this time honouring Charlize Theron (CDs) for the way she provides solid gold inspiration for gay and lesbian people.
Charlize Theron and lesbianism go back a long way. It was Charlize Theron, after all, who ate loads of cakes to bulk up and play a mental murdering lesbian in Monster. And it's Charlize Theron who is being lined up to play Dusty Springfield in a new Ang Lee film. There's also a rumour, entirely made up by us about three seconds ago, that Charlize Theron turned down a Bond girl role because Casino Royale producers wouldn't let her wear Doc Martins or do any other blatantly stereotypical lesbian stuff.
But at the GLAAD Media Awards, Charlize Theron took the highest honour - the Vanguard award - for her persistent refusal to marry long-term boyfriend Stuart Townsend until gay and lesbian couples were granted the right to legally marry in America. Charlize Theron said:
"I feel so fortunate that I am in a relationship with a wonderful man. I find it incredibly unfair that because of our sexual preference, we have the rights that we have, and that, because of someone else's sexual preference, they don't have the same rights."
Noble words by Charlize Theron, there. However, no amount of worthy campaigning will ever make anybody - gay or straight - buy Aeon Flux on DVD.
