Everyone loves the Spider-Man films – so everyone is looking forward to Spider-Man 3, and its all-star cast. Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Theresa Russell, Bryce Dallas Howard…and the old man from Babe.
James Cromwell, the actor most famous for playing the steadfast farmer in the Babe films, has landed himself a Spider-Man 3 role, playing Captain Stacy – the father of the character played by Bryce Dallas Howard. It’s thought that Cromwell’s role will mainly be involved in a bizarre subplot where Captain Stacy trains Spider-Man to herd some sheep against the wishes of an angry dog.
It’s unfair, really, to say that James Cromwell (DVDs) is famous only for playing the old bloke in the Babe films. He’s also played the old bloke in I, Robot, the old bloke in LA Confidential and the old bloke in Six Feet Under. Multi-talented, we tell you.
And now James Cromwell is set to play Captain Stacy in Spider-Man 3. Now, being relatively ungeeky, we’re not sure what that actually means. We know that Captain Stacy is the father of Gwen Stacy (played by Bryce Dallas Howard) who Spider-Man probably loves a bit. Unless Sam Raimi ballses it up.
But we’re nothing if not resourceful here, so we’ve done some
looking up for you. We now know that James Cromwell has probably been
chosen to play Captain Stacy because he looks exactly like the comic
book character, and we also know that – in the Spider-Man comic books, at least –
Captain Stacy is a retired police officer and father figure to Peter
Parker. He also seems to know Spider-Man’s true identity. And he gets
killed when a building falls on him.
Whether or not all this gets put into Spider-Man 3 remains to be
seen. Sam Raimi might balls it up. And, anyway, when are we going to
officially hear that Larry David has joined the Spider-Man 3 cast?
