<p>War may be good for nothing – but it certainly spices up a film. How else can you explain how we found it so difficult to cut this down these down to just 15? It was really, really hard. There are so many good battle scenes in films, it&#8217;s almost inevitable we&#8217;ll have missed a few out.</p>
<p>So to make it easier, we restricted it to just land battles, although spaceships, helicopters and planes are also included in the scenes. Air, space and sea battles will follow. Enjoy!</p>
<p><span id="more-37629"></span><strong>15. Battle of Klendathu<br />
Film:<em> Starship Troopers</em> (1997)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="355" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/MWhrGGrs3Ow&amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/MWhrGGrs3Ow&amp;hl=en" /></object><br />
OK, so it&#8217;s more of a massacre than a battle as 100,000 troops realise the hard way that these bugs are a little harder to squish. Cue limbs flying off, decapitations and general panic. Brilliant!!</p>
<p><strong>14. Battle of Waterloo<br />
Film: <em>Waterloo</em> (1971)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="355" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/3Hom1ZWBGF8&amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/3Hom1ZWBGF8&amp;hl=en" /></object><br />
A stunning re-enactment of <strong>Napoleon</strong>&#8217;s final battle. <strong>Sergei Bondarchuk</strong>&#8217;s film is one of the greatest war movies of all time.</p>
<p><strong>13. Battle of Stirling<br />
Film: <em>Braveheart</em> (1995)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="355" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/VU7FzMwNkS4&amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/VU7FzMwNkS4&amp;hl=en" /></object><br />
OK, this scene is so good we were forced to overlook three facts that should really have disbarred it from being on this list. Firstly, the entire film is a load of bollocks. Secondly, it&#8217;s directed by <strong>Mel Gibson</strong>. And thirdly, most of us at hecklerspray are English.</p>
<p><strong>12. Battle of Rourke&#8217;s Drift<br />
Film:<em> Zulu</em> (1964)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="355" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/1csr0dxalpI&amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1csr0dxalpI&amp;hl=en" /></object><br />
<em>&#8220;Zulus sir, thousands of them.&#8221; </em>He wasn&#8217;t kidding either, as 100 British soldiers somehow hold out against 4,000 terrifying Zulus. <strong>Michael Caine</strong> talking posh is also hilarious.</p>
<p><strong>11. Battle of Stalingrad<br />
Film: <em>Enemy at the Gates</em> (2001)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="355" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/dhebpnpBFg8&amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/dhebpnpBFg8&amp;hl=en" /></object><br />
OK, the rest of the film is a pile of shit, but this scene is simply incredible. If <strong>Jude Law</strong> had got one in  the face, this would have been number one.</p>
<p><strong>10. Battle of Pelennor Fields<br />
Film: <em>Lord of the Rings &#8211; The Return of the King</em> (2003)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="355" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/DIPKrdWuaRQ&amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/DIPKrdWuaRQ&amp;hl=en" /></object><br />
Would have been higher but for the fact that, like the film itself, it goes on a bit and that the final army of the dead part is just a cop out.</p>
<p><strong>9. Assault on Fort Wagner<br />
Film: <em>Glory</em> (1989)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="355" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/rawwMraLLl4&amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/rawwMraLLl4&amp;hl=en" /></object><br />
This scene is so good we were almost proud to be American – even though we&#8217;re not. Does that make any sense? Probably not! Surely, the best American Civil War film to date.</p>
<p><strong>8. Battle of Helm&#8217;s Deep<br />
Film: <em>The Lord of the Rings – The Town Towers</em> (2002)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="355" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/JkbJ6fPCKOE&amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/JkbJ6fPCKOE&amp;hl=en" /></object><br />
But for <strong>Orlando Bloom</strong> surfing down the stairs, this could have been a contender for one of the top spots.  It isn&#8217;t the first time Bloom has ruined a scene and it won&#8217;t be the last.</p>
<p><strong>7. Battle of Silarus River<br />
Film: <em>Spartacus</em> (1960)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="355" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/bOgEJVM_gnI&amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bOgEJVM_gnI&amp;hl=en" /></object><br />
<strong>Kirk Douglas</strong>&#8216; slave revolt all ends in tears in this gripping scene.</p>
<p><strong>6. Battle of Hoth<br />
Film: <em>Empire Strikes Back</em> (1980)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="355" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/JhpS69eAXrU&amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/JhpS69eAXrU&amp;hl=en" /></object><br />
One of the finest moments in the series, as <strong>Luke</strong> et al are forced to beat a hasty retreat by some nasty ATs-ATs.</p>
<p><strong>5. Battle in Germania<br />
Film: <em>Gladiator</em> (2000)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="355" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/kzV87pflcII" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kzV87pflcII" /></object><br />
The only bad about this superb opening scene is that we&#8217;re forced to watch the rest of the film in the knowledge the best bit has already happened.</p>
<p><strong>4. Helicopter Attack<br />
Film: <em>Apocalypse Now</em> (1979)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="355" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/LiI_lumSOwE&amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/LiI_lumSOwE&amp;hl=en" /></object><br />
OK, once again this is more of a massacre than a battle, but the attack on the Vietnamese village to the strains of <strong>Wagner</strong>&#8217;s <em>Ride of the Valkyries</em> is hard to miss out.</p>
<p><strong>3. Battle of Arnhem (parachute jump)<br />
Film: <em>A Bridge Too Far</em> (1977)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="355" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/8G7odvFQwKA" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8G7odvFQwKA" /></object><br />
The shot of thousands of doomed Allied soldiers parachuting down behind enemy lines is almost as impressive as the amount of stars <strong>Richard Attenborough</strong> managed to assemble for this superb war film. Imagine the egos he had to deal with.</p>
<p><strong>2. All of the battle scenes in Ran<br />
<em>Ran </em>(1985)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="355" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/GAxQ6hcuGHM&amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/GAxQ6hcuGHM&amp;hl=en" /></object><br />
Want to get schoolchildren interested in <strong>Shakespeare</strong>? Just show them <strong>Akira Kurosawa</strong>&#8217;s brilliant adaptation of <em>King Lear</em>.</p>
<p><strong>1.    Omaha Beach landing<br />
Film: <em>Saving Private Ryan</em> (1998)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="355" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/_y1YL9C8Hfw&amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/_y1YL9C8Hfw&amp;hl=en" /></object><br />
The first 30 minutes is the closest we ever want to get to real combat. Really scary stuff!</p>

<p>Hollywood has done its very best to correct this mistake since, but there was a time when the world kicked the crap out of each other <strong>without any help from the US</strong>.</p>
<p>Anyway, to acknowledge the fact, <strong>Hecklerspray </strong>has rummaged through the annals of history to come up with the 20 best non-American war films.</p>
<p>Now, that’s not to say there are no Americans featured at all – that would be impossible. </p>
<p>But what we have tried to do is come up with either films about wars which did not involve the US at all or<strong> war stories</strong> told from a different country’s point of view. </p>
<p>It was difficult, we really struggled to cram it down into just 20, so we added a few honourable mentions.</p>
<p>Now, we are sure you have your own suggestions, and we are sure you miserable lot will have no hesitation in telling us which films we missed.</p>
<p><span id="more-15089"></span></p>
<p><strong>20. The Eagle Has Landed (1976)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vbYO_y6wnQQ&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vbYO_y6wnQQ&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br />
We love this film about German paratroopers landing in England and trying to kidnap Winston Churchill so much we even forgot Michael Caine was playing a German. Well, almost.</p>
<p><strong>19. Hotel Rwanda (2004)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ny-TgqSvyMs&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ny-TgqSvyMs&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br />
Ok, so the subject matter is hardly fun family viewing. But it’s a movie you are not likely to forget in a hurry.</p>
<p><strong>18. Taegukgi hwinalrimyeo (2004)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/JikNGlb9lQ8&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/JikNGlb9lQ8&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br />
M.A.S.H was never like this.</p>
<p><strong>17. Waterloo (1971)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/7vlcuvrM1po&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/7vlcuvrM1po&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br />
Some of the best battle scenes ever filmed. Simply stunning.</p>
<p><strong>16. Devils on the Doorstep (2000)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/e2SUlORRcgM&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/e2SUlORRcgM&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br />
Jiang Wen&#8217;s masterpiece about the Japanese invasion of China has the least Hollywood ending of all time. Not your average war film.</p>
<p><strong>15. The Battle of Algiers (1966)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ca3M2feqJk8&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ca3M2feqJk8&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br />
Some of the scenes from Gillo Pontecorvo’s movie about the Algerian War of Independence is so real it feels like a documentary.<br />
It was banned in France, which can only be a good thing.</p>
<p><strong>14. Cromwell (1970)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/YFlG3ak4RZg&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/YFlG3ak4RZg&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br />
Richard Harris is simply superb as the Protestant leader who ruled England during the 17th century.<br />
Just don’t rely on the film for your history homework.<br />
<strong><br />
13. Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WcIehms6u5M&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WcIehms6u5M&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br />
Alec Guinness maintains a stiff upper lip, despite being in a Japanese POW camp.</p>
<p><strong>12. The Counterfeiters (2007)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/qwr9nCurEEQ&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/qwr9nCurEEQ&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br />
A brilliant film about how the Germans tried to win the Second World War by crippling US and British currency. Of course, politicians these days are doing a very job of doing that without the need of counterfeiters.</p>
<p><strong>11. Ran (1985)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/GAxQ6hcuGHM&#038;hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/GAxQ6hcuGHM&#038;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object><br />
Want to get schoolchildren interested in Shakespeare? Just show them Akira Kurosawa&#8217;s brilliant adaptation of King Lear.</p>
<p><strong>10. The Dam Busters (1954)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lCRIsjJFRNo&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lCRIsjJFRNo&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br />
Whether it’s the clipped British accents, the ridiculous facial hair or the unforgettable soundtrack, leaving out this 50s classic about the incredible success of the bouncing bomb during the Second World War out would be a dash bad show.<br />
Note the Star Wars references in the clip.</p>
<p><strong>9. Dr Zhivago (1965)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/BSgryyxp-cg&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/BSgryyxp-cg&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br />
Ok, this is probably just an excuse to use a video of Julie Christie back in her heyday.</p>
<p><strong>8. Das Boot (1981)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/yyj_YNZEGkg&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/yyj_YNZEGkg&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br />
This film, set in the claustrophobic world of a German U-Boat during the Second World War, is so good you almost feel like rooting for the Germans.<br />
Actually, maybe not.</p>
<p><strong>7. El Cid (1961)</strong><br />

OK, so Charlton Heston is very much American.<br />
But the fact he’s playing an 11th Century Spanish warrior who helps drive the Moors out of his country and spends most of the final scenes as a corpse strapped to a horse means the film gets a pass. </p>
<p><strong>6. Lawrence Of Arabia (1962)</strong><br />

Someone once told us there is are no women in David Lean’s masterpiece about the legendary T. E. Lawrence. Can someone tell us if that’s true.</p>
<p><strong>5. Stalingrad (1993)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/uXNrYoO-7qU&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/uXNrYoO-7qU&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br />
Vilsmaier’s vision of the battle of Stalingrad from the point of view of a disillusioned German platoon is so brutal and realistic it makes Saving Private Ryan look like a teddy bear’s picnic.<br />
Sorry, the clip above has no subtitles.</p>
<p><strong>4. Downfall (2004)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ADbTCSuNSms&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ADbTCSuNSms&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br />
A gripping account of Hitler’s last days. Happy ending too!</p>
<p><strong>3. Vita è bella, La (1997)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NBfjzzAVjWo&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NBfjzzAVjWo&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br />
Worth its place purely for doing the impossible: making the Holocaust funny.</p>
<p><strong>2. Come and See (1985)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WFjt0qmoNSA&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WFjt0qmoNSA&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br />
A movie about the Nazi occupation of Belarus, Come and See is disturbing as it is powerful. Next time you are in the video shop with your girlfriend, recommend it. She’ll love it, honest.</p>
<p><strong>1. Zulu (1964)</strong><br />
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1csr0dxalpI&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1csr0dxalpI&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br />
What is it about war films and football that makes men blub like babies?<br />
We’ll sit through movies about puppies being tortured without barely a flicker of emotion. But show us a film in which a group of soldiers overcome overwhelming odds and it’s pass the tissues.<br />
If ever there is a film that captures that spirit it’s Zulu. The 1964 movie about a small regiment trying to keep the British end up in Southern Africa in 1879 against all the odds is simply a masterpiece.<br />
The immortal words &#8220;Zulus, sir. Thousands of them&#8230;&#8221; will live long in the memory.<br />
