HecklerPlay Review: Yuck In Manchester

August 5th, 2012 By Si Sharp

BandEffortlessness is of course the cornerstone of cool.

That's why the Chesterfield hanging out of the corner of James Dean?s mouth is better than the Benson being desperately tugged on by the 14 yr old on the corner of your street. It's why more guitarists want to be Hendrix than Angus Young. It's why every indie rocker in the late 80s wanted to be J Mascis.

And with that Dinosaur Jr reference we?ll move clumsily and rather obviously onto Yuck, a band who seemingly can't be described by writers outside of the context of their apparent influences. Which is a pity since Yuck?s crime isn't sounding derivative, it ?s sounding authentic.

As Erasure Announce UK Tour, We Turn Into Sycophantic Idiots

August 7th, 2012 By Mof Gimmers

When people think of Great British Synthpop, Erasure are often cruelly overlooked by virtue of the fact that they seemed to be having too much fun and embraced their pop-sensibilities with too much gusto.

Basically, po-faced art-schoolers are held up for their future-thinking while Erasure unashamedly went straight for Smash Hits! and Top of the Pops. Of course, Heaven 17, Soft Cell, Human League and Depeche Mode all had big pop hits, but they retained a certain aloofness which made them more credible for some stupid reason.

And with Erasure announcing a new album and an autumn UK tour, it is high time we reminded ourselves just how brilliant they are.

August 27th, 2010 By Mof Gimmers

Imelda May is the siren of sleaze, bringing finger snapping rhythm and booze back from the brink of boring, linear pedestrian choogle. Yessir, with hips that mesmerise and a face you could stalk, Imelda has a new single out and a tour to announce. Start penning depraved fanboy and fangirl letters post-haste!

May first hit the radar after appearing on Jools Holland (and wisely ignoring his advances to sit in on piano) with the ace ‘Johnny Got A Boom Boom’, alerting those with ears that she had a fine, fine LP out called ‘Love Tattoo’.

After her last single, ‘Psycho’,vamped up garage punk, she’s now back with a new brassy-broad number, ‘?Mayhem’, which is released on 13th September on Decca Records. And we have the video for you to ogle.

August 5th, 2012 By Mof Gimmers

If you like all things sixties, particularly the bands that employed fuzz pedals and heavy use of hallucinogens, then you’ll like the dead-eyed dronerock of the Black Angels. No really. This isn’t being written in a sarcastic tone. The good news is that they’re giving away a track from their new LP!

The Black Angels third album is called ‘Phosphene Dream’ and will be coming out in September.

The Austin-based fuzz-cadets still pushing their take on ’60s psychedelia (in a much better and more authentic way than other supposed psych-revivalists around at the moment) and will be hitting the road later in the year.
