Shutter Island Still Spooking Out The Weekend Box Office

The weekend box office could have gone one of three ways this week – with two new films competing for Shutter Island‘s title.

First there was Cop Out, a film starring the funny one from 30 Rock and the bald one from Moonlighting, directed by the man who was too fat to fit into an airport or something. Then there was The Crazies which, if the trailer is any indication, is a single two-hour shot of a girl being pushed through a threshing machine in slow motion. Could either of these have the heft to topple Shutter Island from its spot at the top of the weekend box office?

No, no they couldn’t. This must mean that people prefer Martin Scorsese to hacky buddy cop films and brainless horror remakes. Who knew?

Weekend Box Office: Shutter Island The New Valentine’s Day

Well look at that. Shutter Island is the new number one movie at the weekend box office. Why? Funny you should ask.

We happen to have a theory. Shutter Island is an uncompromisingly terrifying psychological thriller, the sort of thing that audiences need to be warmed up for. So would Shutter Island still be the number one movie at the weekend box office if moviegoers hadn’t been subjected to the relentless, nightmarish terror of Valentine’s Day a week earlier? Almost definitely not.

We were also going to say that audiences were softened up to the baldy shush woman in Shutter Island by watching Ashton Kutcher‘s face in Valentine’s Day. But that would be needlessly cruel, so we’ll just think it instead.

You’ll Never Leave This Island… Shutter Island!

shutter-islandPsychosis, horror and conspiracy are rife in this Martin Scorsese thriller, where U.S. Marshalls Teddy Daniels (Leonardo Di Caprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) find themselves investigating an escape from an institute for the criminally insane.

Something unnatural is happening in the Massachusetts prison, a literal fortress in the coastal wilderness. The prisoners whisper of spirits and a 67th prisoner, though there are cells for only 66.
