MySpace Trawl – Fat Segal

by Matthew Laidlow

This week, we’re going to recommend someone whose music you may hear each week, but will have been blissfully unaware of who it is. If you’re a Skins fan, then get ready to literally jump around the house like you’ve just had six tins of Red Bull. We’ve managed to pester the show’s musical composer [...]

MySpace Trawl – A Cuckoo

by Matthew Laidlow

People making music usually look to modern instruments and technology to produce their sounds.

After all, you wouldn’t find a drum and bass artist recording a track by tapping his fingers really fast on a piece of wood, sampling the noise and then edit the end product in to an audio program.

Musicians spend vast amounts of money on guitar pedals, pieces of software and other instruments. We haven’t really covered many people who aim to create genuinely fresh sounds. A Cuckoo uses beaten-up instruments and objects of fascination as tools of inspiration to create his old-fashioned sound.

MySpace Trawl – Aquilone

by Matthew Laidlow

Aquilone come from a place called France which we immaturely associate with stripy jumpers, bikes, onions, baguettes and garlic.

French people put garlic on everything, even their ice-cream. It’s true; we’d never tell you fibs. Good music has come from this part of the world. Something has to, we guess. Ever since their national football squad went dramatically downhill after winning the World Cup in 1998 nothing amazing has come out of the country.

Electronic acts such as Daft Punk led the way, but recent releases from them have made most of the population want to jump from the Eiffel tower. However, Justice saved the day with some good old fashioned throbbing electro. Aquilone may just be yet another quality example of French music. We wonder if they’ll use mimes in their videos…

MySpace Trawl – Prdctv

by Matthew Laidlow

Arse, its 2009 and no longer can we sit around in our boxer shorts and drink Stella at 9am.

Christmas and New Year have gone, at least until they’re advertised in June again and every website in the world can start another annual end of year list.

So we’re back doing what we fail at best – getting you to change your listening habits from New Kids On The Block to something a bit more leftfield and experimental. No manufactured toss here, just music to leave you feeling happy, distressed or in love with. Prdctv produces accessible and uncomplicated electronic music with offerings of real instrumentation for any supposed musical fans out there who despise music made on laptops.

Lindsay Lohan Didn’t Split Up With Sam Ronson, In Case You Care

by Stuart Heritage

OK, we were wrong. Lindsay Lohan and Sam Ronson haven’t split up – they’re just so miserable that they look like they should split up.

Outraged by all the Sam Ronson split talk, Lindsay Lohan has told the world via her MySpace blog that she and Sam absolutely haven’t split up – which we think is code for ‘let’s give it a fortnight, eh?’

Still, though, they’re still together and that’s good. Now if you feel something clawing wildly at your skin at night you’ll know it’s either a murderer or a feral raccoon, and not Lindsay Lohan trying to get her rocks off. Phew.

MySpace Trawl – Golden Silvers

by Matthew Laidlow

Our only previous experience with gold and silver came when we watched The Crystal Maze where, at the end of the show, the contestants had to collect as many gold tokens as possible and discard the silver ones.

Whilst we aren’t completely sure if Golden Silvers took their name from this concept from The Crystal Maze, we do know that they make indie music that isn’t self-indulgent twaddle about not being able to fit in to a size six pair of skinny jeans. We’ll even go as far as saying that they’ll break the mainstream in 2009.

MySpace Trawl – Kania Tieffer

by Matthew Laidlow

Reasons why you should all like Kania Tieffer:

a) She makes music that is aggressive and bouncy, but still very friendly on the ears.

b) She sings in foreign at times, making everything sound a bit more exotic.

c) She is a very pretty lady and we want to do nothing but cuddle her.

d) We got one of her CDs for 10p and a kiss, something that Axl Rose would never do.

e) She comes from the United States of Belgium

5) Thats about it.

f) Number 5 should have been f.

MySpace Trawl – Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs

by Matthew Laidlow

The further we look through MySpace, the more we come across some artists and bands that even we can’t process properly.

Ever wondered what funk-inspired Portuguese gypsy folk sounds like? It hasn’t been on our list of ones to check out, but when we did, we wished we hadn’t.

A band’s sound is important, but so is their ethos. Do they want to be the next indie band to make it big and then disappear up their own arse? Or do they just want to make music and see where it goes? When on the hunt for some decent electro that hasn’t been used by companies to flog pencils or something, we came across Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. Not only was the name epic, but so was the description of the band.

MySpace Trawl – The Lovely Eggs

by Matthew Laidlow

After hearing the first 30 seconds of The Lovely Eggs song Have You Heard A Digital Accordion we immediately smashed our piggybank to go and purchase a copy of the bands 7″ EP.

With quirky upbeat and addictive songs such as Digital Accordion, it remains a physical impossibility for anyone to sway along or attempt to sing the songs.

The band is made up of David Blackwell and Holly Ross, who was at one point in some sort of Brit girlband called Angelica. We can’t remember them, so they must have been a bit rubbish. Anyway, their musical decline must have been for a reason – so she could write and record glorious nursery rhymes with dashings of weird and wonderful sounds with The Lovely Eggs

Their quirky nature and approach to songwriting is something that we are literally going mental over. Invest in their music now before they become bigger then Fern Britton once her gastric band snaps.

MySpace Trawl – Mr Scruff

by Matthew Laidlow

After a brief stint away to contemplate life and the existence of X Factor, this typically patchy feature returns to guide you towards music you might not know. Whilst away in foreign shores, we found the lack of music amazing. Each night we were treated to tribute acts that varied from laughable to ghastly. A [...]
