MySpace Trawl –Into Flight

by Matthew Laidlow

The great thing about this feature is that we can never run out of bands. Well, that’s unless everyone turns rubbish all of a sudden. But we don’t think that’ll happen anytime soon.

That’s unless there’s a retro revival in the sound of Phil Collins and everyone makes slaphead drummer-influenced albums. Jesus, we hope not.

Sometimes a band has to spend years perfecting their craft before they get a break, or an entire batch of self-released records can be sold. Just because you don’t become an overnight sensation doesn’t mean you’re not destined for great things. We admit to not having known Into Flight three years ago, but we wish we bloody had.

MySpace Trawl – Acrnym

by Matthew Laidlow

Oddly, Acrnym has already featured in MySpace Trawl.

Before you jump to conclusions and accuse us of being lazy, that isn’t the case. Acrnym is a member of band who have recently released an album and are gaining the praises of everyone in the music world.

Compare the two together and you wouldn’t expect it was from the same person. This project takes us into the world of breakcore where time structures don’t exist, samples come from everywhere and fastness is guaranteed. It may not be for everyone, but we like an artist who can switch from doing electronic projects and those that are completely different.

MySpace Trawl – Melt Banana

by Matthew Laidlow

Everyone knows the Japanese are slightly mental. They are at least 50 years more advanced than everyone else in terms of mobile phones, cars and tasty noodle dishes. The music they produce is mental too. When you don’t find yourself sucked into listening to a sickly sweet Japanese pop song, you’ll only get extreme music. [...]

MySpace Trawl – War Tapes

by Matthew Laidlow

Before the age of MP3, Minidisc and CD, everyone consumed their music via the trusty cassette tape. Despite being ridiculously fragile and vulnerable to breaking at the slightest opportunity, this is what was used to listen to whatever crap was popular at the time. We hope War Tapes are spreading the love of the cassette [...]

MySpace Trawl – The Deer Tracks

by Matthew Laidlow

Worried that we’ll spout off some rubbish jokes up about how deers are crap musicians due to their lack of being able to grasp a guitar? Relax, we won’t. Instead we’ll get down to business straight away. The Deer Tracks are a Swedish duo who make wonderfully epic post rock music all mixed in with [...]

MySpace Trawl – FC Kahuna

by Matthew Laidlow

Again dear reader, lets us clarify with you that FC Kahuna aren’t eleven people who play for a football club called Kahuna. It is instead the project of the duo Jon Nowell and Daniel Ormondroyd. We pretty much see them as the UK’s underground version of The Chemical Brothers. They have the ability to produce [...]

MySpace Trawl – Message To Bears

by Matthew Laidlow

Before we harp on about why Message To Bears are unbelievably ace, we’d like to let some of our dimmer readers down.

This isn’t the collective of a group of bears who escaped the circus in China and decided to make an album. As we all know, bears can make porridge at best.

If you did have a message for a bear, what would it be? We’d ask them to stop crapping in woods near us. Bears are allowed to do it and won’t get fined, so how come we get slapped with a fixed penalty? Never mind, that’s a separate issue, let’s concentrate on the wonderful Message To Bears.

MySpace Trawl – Saxon Shore

by Matthew Laidlow

Leaders in their musical field often becoming unchallenged and, usually, it means that other people don’t get a look in.

This sometimes means that young acts struggle to get in whilst old crusty bands plague everyone with their repetitive songs, like The Rolling Stones and – to a strange extent – The Beatles.

In the post rock world, the leaders have been Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mogwai and Explosions In The Sky. After discovering Saxon Shore maybe it’s time more people were made aware of these fragile guitar strokes over a bed raging guitars. Think of them as Mogwai on Prozac.

MySpace Trawl – A Cup Of Tea

by Matthew Laidlow

Cups of tea can’t make songs can they? Well, no they can’t.

Whilst we think it would be nothing short of amazing to see a couple of tea bags, a splash of milk, a spoon and a sweetener somehow create music, it hasn’t happened just yet.

We assume that A Cup Of Tea are named after something their favourite non-alcoholic beverage or because most people have A Cup Of Tea on a daily basis. If that’s the case, then there’s an easy piece of marketing down! Floating somewhere between folktronica and dancetastic grooves, the band are another tiny treasure locked away in the UK electronic scene.
