SLACKERJACK – Air Traffic Mania

by Stuart Heritage

Usually the business sim games we feature as Slackerjacks tend to have relatively slight consequences – fail to serve a customer their coffee in time and lose some money, that sort of thing – but here’s Air Traffic Mania, where any mistakes will result in countless screaming deaths.

In Air Traffic Mania, you have to guide as many planes onto the runway as possible without crashing them into each other, flying through a flock of birds or being shot down by enemy craft. Hey, Air Traffic Mania is just like the John Cusack movie Pushing Tin! Except, you know, not awful and stuff.

SLACKERJACK – Grave Shift

by Stuart Heritage

Since zombies are so cool these days, we’ve decided to give you a game with some zombies in it. Look at us riding this fancy old bandwagon!

Anyway, this is Grave Shift – an isometric zombie game. Kind of. Grave Shift is a bit Zelda-y and only slightly zombie-ish, so the extent that actually we’re not all that sure how you actually play it. But, hey, if you like walking around chased by evil dogs who never deviate from their set paths, Grave Shift is the game for you. Probably.

SLACKERJACK – Look Out Mr Johnson

by Stuart Heritage

Oh yeah, it’s Halloween week. We may as well play along for once. Here’s Look Out Mr Johnson in that case. It’s a sort of vaguely Halloweeny game, we suppose. We’ll give Look Out Mr Johnson one thing – it’s a bit clever. In Look Out Mr Johnson, you have to get Mr Johnson through [...]

SLACKERJACK – Qink

by Stuart Heritage

Games are fun, aren’t they? Yes? Good. Because here’s a game. It’s a game called Qink. Is Qink a good game? Ummm…

It probably would be, if we had the patience or intelligence to practise it. Basically in Qink there’s a cube, and the cube is broken down into segments. Your job is to fill the segments with coloured shapes provided by selected groups of them. Then all you need to do is ensure that each side of the cube is filled with shapes of the same colour and you’re away. Easy huh? Now go play.

SLACKERJACK – Clusterz

by Stuart Heritage

It’s been ages since we gave you a nice multiplayer game, so here’s Clusterz – a nice multiplayer game.

Essentially Clusterz is an online Bust A Move, where you have to shoot coloured balls at other coloured balls to make them disappear. But Clusterz works because you’re playing against someone else in realtime, which adds tension. Also, if you miss a shot, your game will get much much harder, but we’ll leave that as a surprise for you. Nice soundtrack too.

SLACKERJACK – Warfare 1917

by Stuart Heritage

First an admission – we played Warfare 1917 so much last week that we were honestly toying with not writing anything on Thursday afternoon. Warfare 1917 is, without exaggeration, one of the best games we’ve ever played on any platform.

Warfare 1917 flings you right into the muddy trenches of Europe in the middle of the First World War and asks you to push forward bit by bit until all of Europe is yours. You can do this by throwing hundreds of men at the enemy, by training a select group of specialist soldiers, by timing your strikes with air raids or a mixture of the three. In Warfare 1917 you can be as tactical as you like, but whatever you do it’ll suck you in without question. Plus you can play as the Germans if you want, which we do.

SLACKERJACK – Curl Rush

by Stuart Heritage

Rarely have we been as perplexed playing a simple jump and run platform game as we have with Curl Rush. Either we’re terrible at it or it’s total bum. And we can’t tell which one’s right.

Curl Rush is exactly the same as every other platform game you’ve ever played – you run around collecting stuff and jumping over gaps and whatnot, except everything kills you instantly, the physics are the worst we’ve ever seen, the soundtrack makes us want to commit suicide and the whole thing’s so utterly pointless that you may as well spend the 10 seconds you were planning on using to play Curl Run doing something more constructive, like humming the theme tune to ‘Allo ‘Allo or pointing at your knees.

SLACKERJACK – Wooden Path

by Stuart Heritage

Oh good, a slippy slotty brainteaser. Wooden Path is one of those games that looks like it should be easy, and is presented in a way that makes it seem like it’s for children, but will leave your head in millions of aching pieces.

The aim of Wooden Path is to join up separate wooden blocks to form a bridge over a river. It seems preposterously easy, but then Wooden Path goes and chucks in all sorts of nonsense like magical teleporting blocks and golden rings and whatnot, and the end result is a game that’ll make you feel like some sort of dreadful gormless twonk.

SLACKERJACK – Boombot World

by Stuart Heritage

Not so long ago we told you that Boombot was the new Bloons. We meant that in a good way – because it was made by the same people and it had the same fiendish level design – but now we can see that we meant it in a bad way too.

Why? Because here’s Boombot World and, like the Bloons Player Pack games, it’s a selection of Boombot levels created by players rather than actual designers. Like the Bloons PP games, this makes for a wholly unsatisfying game – levels are either slung together hopelessly or made to be so pointlessly intricate that you could play them for a million years and never get anywhere near completing it. Leave it to the pros next time, eh?

SLACKERJACK – Funky Ball 99

by Stuart Heritage

Look you, it doesn’t matter what this game is about – it’s called Funky Ball 99 for the love of baby Jesus. How could you not want to play a game called Funky Ball 99? But – ugh – here’s a description if you must.

Phenomenally simplistic, all Funky Ball 99 asks you to do is roll a ball around a level to reach a target. But control of the ball is everything – you need to be completely on top of the speed and direction of the ball to stand any chance of doing well. Funky Ball 99 is one of those games that you’ll understand within a millisecond of playing it, so give it a whirl why don’t you.
