SLACKERJACK – Throw Paper

by Ian Dransfield

This reminds us of an episode of The Simpsons. Marge is trying to the kids to do the gardening, but they refuse on the grounds it’s boring – later in the same episode Bart gets really excited when he sees a videogame called ‘Virtual Gardener’ or something along those lines, and rushes to play. Great [...]

Myspace Trawl – Death By Panda

by Matthew Laidlow

We like it immensely when stuff is made simpler for us. Not because we’re lazy sods whose biggest daily challenge is picking up the remote off the floor, but because we like having things made easier for us. Wouldn’t it be ace if there were a device that did things when you thought it? Don’t [...]

SLACKERJACK – MSOIDS

by Ian Dransfield

Take an old idea and make it seem new – it’s a Hollywood technique that applies just as much to the games industry. But then, this is a free game that you can play online with little to no commitment, so these criticisms really don’t apply. It’s just that was a reasonable way to open [...]

Download A New Mogwai Track Now!

by Matthew Laidlow

Hooray! Mogwai are back and they’ve brought their unique style of uplifting guitar music back with them.

The post rock outfit are one of the best in the genre, after Godspeed You! Black Emperor pretty much created the genre and Explosions In The Sky and Sigur Ros brought it to the masses.

People sometimes call Mogwai moody and depressing, but anyone who presses up a line of t-shirts saying ‘Blur: are shite’ are winners in our eyes. This free track, The Sun Smells Too Loud is taken from their new album The Hawk Is Howling and won’t hit the shelves until September 22. So use this song as a sampler for an album which will more than likely be another success.

Nick Bollea Is Free! Free! (Not Free)

by Stuart Heritage

They say you should always be careful what you wish for, especially if you wish to share a prison cell with three twitching teenage criminals.

As luck would have it, that’s exactly what Hulk Hogan’s son Nick Bollea has been wishing for in public all week. He’s been desperate to get out of the solitary confinement cell that he’s been kept in since he went to prison almost a month ago.

And now, even though a judge ignored his pleas earlier in the week, Nick Bollea has been moved into a communal cell, where he’ll get to experience all the heady delights that prison has to offer when you’re a 17-year-old boy doing time for crashing a wildly expensive supercar and your resentful cellmates have had to give up some of their precious personal space just so they can accommodate a spoilt little rich boy.

You! Have A Free Sigur Ros Song

by Matthew Laidlow

Like the title suggests, yet another high profile band is giving its music away for free. Not because it’s shit or anything, but purely down to the fact everyone else is doing so.

Sigur Ros creates some of the most amazing music known to man/woman/child/budgie. The epic vocals of singer Jonsi are totally unique and nothing like we’ve heard before. Combined with gorgeous fragile music that has the power to stop you in your tracks, the band is nothing short of amazing. Icelandic may not be the first language of everyone, but this does not matter at all – the songs sound better then they ever would do then if Chas & Dave were to give them the old cockney treatment.

Gobbledigook is taken from the bands fifth album Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (With a buzz in our ears we play endlessly). The new record is set for release at the end of June and we can’t wait. If it’s anything like this song, it won’t disappoint. Oh, that buzz in your ears may be tinnitus. Best get it checked out.

Coldplay Single Downloaded By 2m, Enjoyed By Far Fewer

by Stuart Heritage

Hey everyone, Coldplay are back! Finally, drearily self-important, emotionally hollow stadium rock for people who don’t like music has a voice again!

To mark their return, Coldplay recently decided to release their new single Violet Hill as a free download. And apparently Violet Hill has now been downloaded by two million people eager to hear Coldplay’s Spanish-influenced, Brian Eno-helmed new direction.

Sadly there aren’t any figures for how many people only listened to Violet Hill once, rolled their eyes because it’s exactly the same as every other Coldplay song ever written and instantly deleted it from their iTunes library. We’re guessing it’s just a shade off two million.

Nine Inch Nails: Here, Have Some More Rubbish Music For Free

by Stuart Heritage

Nine Inch Nails have always been pioneers, first in making rubbish music for sad idiots and now in innovative distribution methods.

Following an experiment with some self-indulgent noodly-doodly instrumental tracks earlier this year, Nine Inch Nails has decided to give its new album away to fans for free, without even an option to pay anything, until it comes out on CD when you suckers will have to cough up.

This move by Nine Inch Nails obviously has its critics, who claim that giving away music for free devalues it to the point where it becomes worthless. But these critics are plainly fools – the music of Nine Inch Nails has always been kind of worthless to everyone except for panda-eyed 13-year-olds with BO and a low-level interest in self harm. This just levels the playing field out a bit.
