Some horror movies really are shocking. Yep, they are that bad. But there are some that have contain genuine shocks – moments that really make your jaw drop and your toes genuinely curl.

They are rare these days, admittedly. After decades of all kinds of horror movies, the ability to shock viewers has become harder and harder.

We have just about seen every way a ridiculously hard to kill maniac killer with superhero strength can kill a cheerleader. We have usually already guessed who the mystery killer is.

Plus there are only so many times you can watch someone have their insides ripped out by some slavering beast.

Yawn.

But there are moments in horror movies that have really left us speechless.

These moments are burnt into our very souls.

Here are our picks…

Finding out that Norman was pretending to be his dead mother while killing people was genuinely shocking and probably gave my grandparents kittens.

It is funny now, but at the time it must have been very shocking.

I have no idea what it is. All we know is that it has genitals and makes a horrible animal noise.

Death and zombies, death and zombies – go together like a horse and carriage. Or so Frank Sinatra did not sing, ever.

But he should have done, because they are a great combination.

Like fish and chips or Madonna and the chronic desire to plunge nails into your eyes.

Of course, that’s because zombies are actually dead, but still somehow manage to die again and deal out death.

(Before you start, we know they are actually ‘undead’).

Anyway, the point is there are a lot of good death scenes in zombie movies – and after having so much fun writing our last zombie list – we decided to do it all over again.

Obviously, we have stuck some different clips in there (mostly) for you to enjoy, but essentially it was just an excuse to enjoy looking up some of our favourite horror films.

From unstoppable robots with Austrian accents to psychopathic Cuban gangsters, it seems we cannot get enough of badasses on the silver screen.

It’s almost impossible to genuinely surprise and shock people in movie theatres these days.

We’ve already seen it all. We suspect every member of the cast of being the murderer. We’ve developed strong stomachs after seeing just about every imaginable way an unstoppable maniac with a huge knife can kill horny teenagers. Even most of the sexual taboos have become mainstream and boring by today’s standards.

Anyway, we may feel pretty unshockable now, but here at hecklerspray we wanted to pay homage to the groundbreaking, WTF moments that really had us staring blankly at the screen in disbelief. These clips are comprised of dastardly plot twists, sickening scenes of deaths or mutilation and, well, moments that really had us questioning the director’s sanity. Enjoy. The worst thing about this moment is the sound it makes when she cuts off his manhood in the bath – and the fact he does not even realise what she has done!!

Moment: On a wire

The end scene gave us nightmares for weeks.

20. The Orphanage
Moment: Best advert ever for road safety

This could easily be the creepy kid with the sack on his head, but it’s pipped by the moment the old woman is run over by a car. Her face is something that will haunt us for a long time. In fact it is so bad, We don’t even want to put it on our site.

19. Oldboy
Moment: Cutting off his tongue

It’s a pretty messed-up movie in general, but it was hard to watch as he decides to cut his tongue off.

18. An American Werewolf in London
Moment: Nazi zombie stormtroopers

There was us innocently watching a werewolf film and then suddenly Nazi zombie soldiers storm into his house and slaughter his family. To make it worse, he then wakes up, another one pops up and stabs Jenny Agutter to death.

17. Ichi the Killer
Moment: Ichie is turned on by rape
The hardest thing was narrowing this film down into one moment. Our jaws were wide open throughout out this movie. It’s basically about a guy who is normally timid, but turns into a homicidal maniac with knives in his shoes when he gets angry. Think Incredible Hulk and James Bond meets Halloween. But the moment that probably shocked us to the core is the moment he starts getting aroused by a girl being raped in high school.

16. Irreversible
Moment: Rape scene
One of the most disturbing moments in movie history.

15. Evil Dead
Moment: Tree rape

Wood you believe it!!!!

14. Pink Flamingos
Moment: Eating shit

Again, the whole movie is shocking, but the dog poo eating incident takes the biscuit. The dog biscuit.

13. Empire Strikes Back
Moment: I am your father

Darth Vader is Luke‘s dad? Our fragile, infant minds really could not cope.

12. Deliverance
Moment: Squeal like a pig

It could easily have been the deformed kid playing the banjo, but the male rape scene is pretty shocking.

11. Don’t Look Now
Moment: Midget attacks

Donald Sutherland finally corners what he believes is the ghost of his dead daughter, only to realise it’s actually a Venetian midget with a knife. If you think about it, it’s actually more realistic.

10. American History X
Moment: Curb stomping

Nothing on earth could have prepared us for that sound.

9. Psycho
Moment: Mom?
So, his mother is actually dead and the killer is actually Norman himself pretending to be his dead mom. It seems tame by today’s standards, but must have stunned audiences at the time.

8. Un Chien Andalou
Moment: Eye, eye, that’s gotta hurt

Still one of the most shocking and disturbing moments in cinema history. We just can’t look. Neither can she now.

7. Pee Wee Herman’s Big Adventure
Moment: Large Marge

Put us off hitchhiking forever.

6. The Exorcist
Moment: Giving it head

It could easily be the moment with the crucifix, but the head turn just wins because of the sheer stupidity of it. It looks ridiculous, but actually works.

5. Sleepaway Camp
Moment: What the hell is that?

The ending of Sleepaway Camp – a pretty average 80s slasher movie – will live long in the memory. It’s the moment the killer is revealed to be Angela – and, to this day, we have no idea what it is. All we know is that it has genitals and makes a horrible animal noise.

4. Saving Private Ryan
Moment: War’s a beach

So this is what war is actually like. The storming of Omaha beach is truly terrifying.

3. Full Metal Jacket
Moment: Private Pyle goes nuts

OK, it had been building up for a while – but did you really think it would end up like this? Gripping cinema. Just brilliant.

Let’s rewind to another, simpler, stupider time: the 1980s.

It was a time when some things happened, some stuff did some stuff and some naughty drugs were taken a lot by high-powered businessmen in high-powered business suits.

It was also a time when the original The Evil Dead movie came out, made for around $375,000, starring nobodies, with a sense of humour and receiving a great deal of positive remarks from the critics. Fast forward to the other year and Sam Raimi, director of The Evil Dead has just released Spider-Man 3; a huge-budget summer blockbuster, starring some of Hollywood’s biggest names and courting some very mixed reviews.

The hecklerspray review? It’s shit. No one wants an emo Spider-Man.

Anyway – whatever could be next for the director who really has worked his arse off, seemingly to make some medicore-but-expensive films, all with cameos of Bruce Campbell? Why not move on to some Disney stuff, to make your journey to the dark side complete? Oh, he already has. The bugger.

Yes, Sam Raimi has made his move to the truly evil realms of Hollywood complete by signing on to produce The Transplants – a Disney film referred to as ‘an action-adventure with a comedic bent’. We can handle that. Maybe. It’s alright – he’ll do a good job, surely… right?

But hold on – there’s no need for unfounded optimism. The threat of Raimi truly making the film his own and thus giving it what we call ‘potential’ has been immediately quashed, as The Transplants is written by Adam Jay Epstein and Andrew Jacobsen. For those who don’t know, which will be most of you, they wrote Not Another Teen Movie.

Ah well, it’ll just be another movie to ignore in a year or two. Not like we don’t have a big enough list to fit them all on.

Maybe we will be proven very wrong though, for once, and this will turn out to be a wonderful experience for the whole family. Maybe Raimi will take the title a little more literally than what is probably intended, and subject the audience to two hours of hilarious organ and limb transplants for the sake of medical/Disney science, with cameos of famous characters for good measure.

Baloo could swap brains with The Lion King‘s Scar, making for one of the most evil and physically threatening characters in the history of film. Pick a paw paw BAM! One dead Mowgli.

Maybe the kids from High School Musical could have their limbs replaced with those of Bambi, making for far more entertaining dance routines.

Or Robin Williams’ Genie from Aladdin could be transplanted. Off the screen. Forever.

As long as Raimi keeps his own sense of humour and puts Bruce Campbell in there somewhere it’s sure to keep the nerds happy. Oh, and as long as we don’t have to put up with another unlikeable emo superhero.

Violence in movies – terrible, isn’t it. No! We all like to see a good old-fashioned scrap once in a while.

Don’t even try to deny it. You may try and act like you abhor violence in movies, but deep down the sight of two people kicking the crap out of each other really gets you going.

Well, hecklerspray understands. There’s been many a time when we have pictured ourselves beating Sting to a bloody pulp. See kids, violence is fine as long as it’s in your mind, not on the streets. Anyway, to celebrate the fact that we all love to see someone evil get a good hiding, we have come up with our 10 favourite fight scenes in films.

10. From Russia With Love (1963)

James Bond has had many brutal encounters on his way to saving the world, but none quite as thrilling as this punch-up against Robert Shaw‘s assassin in a narrow train compartment. Shaw’s crime: asking for red wine with fish. That’ll teach him.

9. The Big Country (1958)
You see, men really were men back in the old days. This manly jaw-breaker between Gregory Peck and Charlton Heston goes on so long the people watching it go to bed. Even the following morning they are still slugging away at each other.

8. Kill Bill Volume 1

To us, this scene in which Uma Thurman kills off an entire army of deadly assassins is when Quentin Tarantino came of age as a director. Without his superb dialogue to help him, he still managed to come up with a superbly co-ordinated and creative fight sequence, which culminates in the spectacular demise of Lucy Liu’s character. Oh, and it’s got lots of limbs being chopped off

7. Bridget Jones’ Diary

We do feel a slight amount of shame for putting this pathetic excuse for a brawl between Bridget Jones’ would-be suitors in a list of the finest fights in movie history. But, let’s face it, we all like to think in a fight situation that we would kick ass like Bruce Lee. However, in reality we probably fight more like fucking Ang Lee

6. King Kong

King Kong kicking the crap out of three T-Rexes is the monster of all fight scenes.

5. Oldboy (2003)

Armed with just a hammer, the main character in this 2003 South Korean film has to somehow find his way past a narrow corridor cluttered with baddies trying to stop him. All in one take. It’s hammer time

4. Empire Strikes Back

It’s possibly the most iconic chapter in the entire series. After an exhausting duel with Darth Vader, Luke gets his hand cut off and is told the truth about his father. Hecklerspray remembers walking out of the cinema still in shock.

3. Happy Gilmore (1998)

After constantly bickering throughout a round of golf. Adam Sandler finally punches Bob Barker in the mouth. It leads to one of the funniest fight scenes in history. “The price is wrong, bitch.”

2. Evil Dead 2

Beaten up by your own hand – what a slap in the face that is. But that’s just what happens to hero Ash after his hand is bitten by one of the, er, evil dead. He thinks he has the final laugh when he cuts off it off with a chainsaw, but that is only the start. Very funny.

1. They Live

We’re pretty sure this is the longest fight sequence in history. It just goes on, and on, and on…
