OK, we get it – God hates famous people. That’s why he’s so busy killing them all at the moment.

But still, DJ AM? He’d already been through enough, hadn’t he? Not only did he barely survive a plane crash not so long ago, but he was also once engaged to Nicole Richie. That’s too much misery for any man to take, surely.

So maybe that’s why sources are claiming that DJ AM’s death this weekend was suicide. It’s an assumption backed up by all the OxyContin found in his body and the crack pipe that he died next to. Like we said, depressing.

Death has been playing some cruel tricks on celebrities over the last few months, bumping several of them off in the most bizarre circumstances possible. Sure, some were killed by old age or lengthy battles with disease – but others have been dispatched with sudden heart attacks or enormous doses of medical-grade anaesthetic or a shoelace, some ladies’ underwear and a Bangkok cupboard. And then there’s DJ AM, whose death this weekend was just miserable.

Previously famous for being engaged to Nicole Richie and for narrowly escaping the plane crash that almost killed him and Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker, DJ AM was found dead in his apartment on Friday, lying on a pile of crack next to a crack pipe. And, while his family is maintaining that the death was accidental, some sources are claiming that the presence of OxyContin in his system hints towards a suicide. MSNBC reports:

Authorities investigating the death of DJ AM have found that he had eight undigested OxyContin pills in his stomach and a ninth in his mouth. The finding suggests that DJ AM — real name Adam Goldstein — swallowed the powerful painkillers quickly. “He wanted to die,” says the source, who says the suicide theory is supported by the pills and other evidence. “He was going unconscious when he took the last one. He didn’t even swallow it.”

Autopsy and toxicology reports into DJ AM’s death haven’t been released yet, but even when they are it’s unclear if they’ll be able to solidify exactly what happened in the days and hours before he died.

Upsettingly, DJ AM has just become one more celebrity who’s managed to die during 2009. It’s worrying, not only because of the human trauma and suffering that DJ AM’s death will cause to those close to him, but also because – if the pattern holds up like it has been – by Christmas the most famous person on the planet will be the one out of Westlife that looks a bit like a horse.

Horrible news if you missed it – this weekend former Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker and DJ Am were involved in a plane crash that killed four people.

While it’s a near miracle that Travis Barker and DJ AM – real name Adam Goldstein – weren’t killed when their Learjet skidded off a runway in South Carolina on Friday night, the pair of them have suffered serious second- and third-degree burns.

However, both Travis Barker and DJ AM are expected to make full recoveries from their injuries. Meanwhile, investigators have claimed that a burst tyre prior to take-off my have led to the crash.

Travis Barker and DJ AM have, in the past, contributed the some of the most pointless stories we’ve ever dealt with. DJ AM, for example, was once engaged to Nicole Richie, while Travis Barker might have started a fight between Paris Hilton and some other woman in a nightclub once. All utterly inconsequential, yet still not enough for either of them to deserve what happened to them on Friday night.

On Friday night, after performing a free concert in Columbia, the Learjet carrying Travis Barker, DJ AM and four others skidded off a South Carolina runway, smashed through a fence and crashed into a nearby road. The crash killed the pilot and co-pilot, plus Travis Barker’s personal assistant and a man thought to be his bodyguard.

While it’s claimed that Travis Barker and DJ AM only escaped death by managing to free themselves from the wreckage in time, the pair of them have spent the weekend in a critical condition being treated for second- and third-degree burns. Travis Barker is said to have suffered burns to his torso and lower body, while Goldstein’s burns were to his arms and head. However, it’s thought that both stars will eventually make full recoveries from their injuries.

Meanwhile, investigators seem to be pinning the cause of the crash on a blown tyre, as the Los Angeles Times reports:

Debbie Hersman, spokeswoman of the National Transportation Safety Board, said investigators recovered the cockpit’s voice recorder and spent hours dissecting the relevant minutes of conversation between the Learjet’s pilots. “The crew reacted to a sound consistent with a tire blowout. The crew attempted to reject the takeoff, but they were unable to stop the aircraft before it departed the runway.”
