Canabalt

Remember Canabalt? Of course you do – every third online game at the moment is a variation of it.

Well here’s the bad news – Ninja Run is also a variation of Canabalt. But here’s the good news – it’s got NINJAS in it. And the ninjas THROW THINGS! That’s right, instead of Canabalt‘s simple one-button control system, Ninja Run is slightly more complicated – you throw, you jump, you speed up and you slow down. Whether or not you prefer Ninja Run to Canabalt is largely down to how much you like pressing buttons.

fathomFrom the good people who bought you the impossibly addictive Canabalt, but Fathom is pretty much the exact opposite of what their breakout game represented.

In Canabalt you pressed one button to jump, and that was all. Simple, addictive and easy to understand. Fathom, though, is something else entirely. We’re not even sure if we want to explain the game to you, partly because we don’t want to spoil the surprise and partly because we’re not really sure what it’s about ourselves. Nevertheless, all you need to know about Fathom is that it starts off as a platform shooter and then veers off somewhere quite unexpected. Don’t forget – the word ‘fathom’ has more than one meaning.

canabaltIf you took any normal online game, stripped it down to its simplest form and increased the ‘one more go’ factor by a million, the resulting game would be a lot like Canabalt.

In Canabalt, all you really need to do is jump – the running’s all taken care of. You just jump whenever an obstacle gets in your way or you need to leap to a new ledge. And yet something about Canabalt is thrilling. It might be the animation, it might be the unseen foe – either way, it’s great.
