Suge Knight Gets His Assets Frozen

Digg this!

FrozenWhen you think of Suge Knight, you think of a great big jetsetter flying around the world with a cigar in his mouth, making rappers into superstars and growling at anyone less successful than him (pretty much everyone).

You don’t necessarily think of Suge Knight as a bloke who possibly shot himself in the leg one day and then had his assets frozen by a judge the next. But that’s basically what happened to him.

The enormous rap mogul hit the headlines a few weeks ago for being
the victim of a shooting at an MTV MVA party hosted by Kanye West (CDs). The
police still have no leads as to who shot Knight in the leg, but they
are still looking at the incident being an accident, with Suge either
getting shot by one of his entourage or possibly even shooting himself.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, a Los Angeles judge decided to freeze Knight’s assets the very next day.

To find out why this happened we have to go back to 2002. That’s
when a woman named Lydia Harris filed a civil lawsuit against Suge
Knight, claiming he owed her millions of dollars in unpaid profits and
royalties. She was apparently the Vice President of Death Row records
at the inception of the company, although Suge at the time denied this.

However, a judge this year ordered Knight to pay Harris $107 million
after he found that Knight and his attorneys violated some court
mandates. The money has yet to be paid.

Now the husband of Lydia Harris  – currently serving a 28-year
prison sentence for drug dealing – wants a divorce. And half of the
$107 million, naturally. And so judge has named Suge as a party in the
divorce, and has frozen his assets to stop him "disposing or transferring his assets away."

A broken leg and frozen assets? Sounds painful…

  • The Harrises are angered by Knight’s absence from three debtor examinations — he also missed the most recent hearing.

Attorney Steve Goldberg says, “Enough is enough. It is time for a receiver and an order for contempt. There are rules of court that should be obeyed and Mr. Knight is making a mockery of it.”

Harris’ attorney Rex Beaber accused Knight of shifting his assets, but Knight’s lawyer, Dermot Givens promised the judge his client would attend the next scheduled hearing on April 1 and would not hide any assets.
