Ever noticed how it’s always the most preposterous people that have the worst sense of humour?
Slipknot (CDs), a metal band made up of rockers in frightmasks whose stage antics include inhaling the fumes of a liquefied dead bird in a jar until they vomit, are apparently outraged that Burger King might have stolen their image for a series of American commercials.
In the commercials for Burger King chicken
fries, a metal band named Coq Roq sing heavy metal songs about Burger
King while dressed up in scary chicken masks. And according to
Slipknot, that’s infringing on their image. The Smoking Gun reports of
a letter from Slipknot threatening legal action against the burger
chain, claiming that Coq Roq was specifically created as a "look-alike,
sound alike ‘band’ in order to influence the Slipknot generation to
purchase chicken fries".
Burger King and their advertising agency have filed a complaint in
response, claiming that Slipknot’s complaint is damaging the fast food
chain’s business interests.
Coq Roq is supposedly made up of band members Fowl Mouth, Firebird,
The Talisman, Free Range, Kubuki and Sub-Sonic. Their songs are like a
metal version of MC Pee Pants, including Bob Your Head ("shake
your lean white meat"), Cross The Road ("Chicken Fries are what I
need") and One-Armed Bandit ("I want more and more/I can’t get
enough/Addicted to chicken fries/I just love this stuff").
Trademark infringement or not, let’s all just be thankful that the music in the adverts wasn’t based on Slipknot’s godawful last album. That really would have been horrifying.
