Here's something we didn't anticipate. Family members of murder victim Ron Goldman seem to think that paying OJ Simpson millions of dollars to write a book where he invents a brand new way to murder their relative was probably in bad taste.
Who'd have thought? In fact, it's probably fair to say that Ron Goldman's dad is so incensed with If I Did It, Here's How It Happened by OJ Simpson that he's launching a lawsuit against OJ Simpson, for allegedly making $1 million from the deal in a fraudulent way. And Fred Goldman isn't stopping there – it's thought that similar lawsuits will be aimed at fired If I Did It, Here's How It Happened publisher Judith Regan and possibly Rupert Murdoch for overseeing the whole shebang. All in all, the event has caused OJ Simpson to put pen to paper for a second time, to write a new book called If I Did It, I'd Try And Make Sure That I Somehow Bumped Fred Goldman Off Too.
Typical isn't it? You try and write a book about the manner in which you would have brutally murdered your ex-wife and her friend – even though they've already been murdered and you were found legally liable for their deaths in a civil court – and all you get is shit from people about it.
Just ask OJ Simpson. Ever since he decided to graphically describe the way that he would have killed Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman if it was him that did it in the book If I Did It, Here's How It Happened all sorts of terrible things have happened. First Rupert Murdoch – who was thought to have given the book the go-ahead in the first place – decided to axe OJ Simpson's murder book in the face of all kinds of complaints, and then the publisher of the book, Judith Regan, was fired after the book apparently led her into a weird Mel Gibson-style anti-Jew meltdown. Oh, and ten people wrote some OJ Simpson haikus.
Despite all copies of If I Did It, Here's How It Happened by OJ Simpson being pulped – and the accompanying TV interview being removed from schedules – OJ Simpson still got his fair share of blood money from it, and this upsets Fred Goldman, the father of murdered Ron Goldman. It upsets him enough to sue OJ Simpson, as the Los Angeles Times reports:
Goldman's lawsuit, filed Tuesday, claims that the former star received a $1-million advance for the aborted book deal and created a dummy corporation, Lorraine Brook, named for his two children's middle names, to hide income to avoid paying restitution on it.
Although Fred Goldman is partly angry that OJ Simpson was going to dream up a spectacular way to murder his dead son and make money from it, he's also upset that OJ Simpson still hasn't paid him the $30 million that he was ordered to when Simpson was found to be legally liable for the death of Ron Goldman – including money made from the murder book. Fred Goldman has made several attempts to get the money from OJ – who has so far avoided the payment thanks to a legal loophole about his NFL pension – including a recent failed attempt to seize control of OJ Simpson's name, image and likeness. And it's thought that both Judith Regan and Rupert Murdoch could face similar lawsuits in the near future, too. About the book, not about getting control of the likenesses. That would just be weird.
It may be weeks or months before any kind of conclusion to this latest lawsuit is reached, but meanwhile OJ Simpson is setting up a new way of making money from the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman – the If I Did It, Here's How It Happened theatre tour, where OJ Simpson will be able to demonstrate exactly how he would have murdered his ex-wife and her friend on a couple of life-sized mannequins moulded from slightly undercooked kebab meat to an auditorium of screaming children.
