Mere hours ago I posted part 2 of a series of GIFs representing how I’ve been handling the shit show that is 2016. When I posted that blog this morning I figured: there are only four days left to this shit year, what other major pop culture/global tragedies could even happen?
To that, 2016 said: Ha! Screw you, bitch, I’m taking Princess Leia. Which it then did. I am incredibly, INCREDIBLY sad to report that at the young age of 60, the iconic Carrie Fisher has passed away.
As some of you may have heard, Fisher suffered from a heart attack during a flight on December 23rd, but was believed to be in stable condition. However, this morning her daughter, Scream Queens breakout star, Billie Lourd, confirmed that her mother had peacefully passed away.
There have been a lot of BIG celebrity deaths this year, but this one is up there with Bowie for me. Carrie Fisher is such a fucking icon for me across the board. My son is 1 and a half and has already seen all the Star Wars movies and owns a ton of Star Wars memorabilia because clearly I’m the type of parent who forces her interests on her kids.
Aside from playing one of the most iconic female characters of all time, Carrie Fisher also appeared in classics like When Harry Met Sally, and cult classics that defined my childhood like Drop Dead Fred. She was also in the little seen horror film Sorority Row, which is so bad it’s amazing.
This has been such an incredibly rough year and so many wonderful people have been lost. I feel it’s only fitting that I pick a perfect GIF to represent how I feel about the passing of Carrie Fisher:
Rest in Peace, Leia. May the force always be with you.
