REVIEW: The K-Box

by hecklerspray staff on June 16, 2009 8 Comments

The Hecklerspray office has been rocking today, thanks to a fantastic little device called the K-box, which transforms any flat surface into a speaker.

kbox-avatarYeah, you heard us. Floors and desks have never been so goddamned noisy before. It’s a sensation. Aimed at iPhones and similar portable music devices, the K-box will massively amplify the sound without needed a traditional speaker.

It’s genuinely a bit weird. You could theoretically turn a train carriage into a nightclub with this thing.

So how does it work? Well, it has a gel surface that transfers and projects sound. What’s remarkable is the amount of bass you get from the K-box.

Check out this video, from another K-box user, which demonstrates what we’ve been experiencing:

The K-box costs £39.99 and is exclusive to Kerchoonz, a social networking platform for music fans and artists.

Incorrect arrangement of any speakers on a solid platform will yield a very similar result. This is why speakers generally come on stands or with floor spikes, to reduce what is essentially an undesirable reproduction of the music (it is undesirable because, funnily enough, music sounds a lot better coming from the speakers than it does coming from your desk). As such, I’ve never been interested in these things, cute though they are. It is a clever little gimmick but in real terms it doesn’t come close to a real set of speakers arranged correctly. Oh, and stereo anyone? You’re going to need two sources with appropriate separation for decent stereo reproduction.

Got one, impressive bass for the size,
Tom I don’t think anyone expects these units to sound better than tower loudspeakers, do you take your hi fi every time you go out to the park?

Just like all the other gel speakers I’ve heard, this one is crap.

I lol’d about the “is exclusive to Kerchoonz” really then why do they sell the same device also called as Wowee on Amazon, Play.com, and a few other sotes. So far I found the same device inder 3 different names that look exactly the same. Just check out “Wowee speaker” in youtube and see that it’s the same thing. Plus it’s cheaper elsewhere.
