Girls are weird, aren’t they? You never see Russell Crowe spazzing out because he wore the same tuxedo to an awards ceremony as Tom Hanks – but when Reese Witherspoon does it, all hell breaks loose.
Reese Witherspoon wore a sort of white and silver dress thing to the Golden Globes this year. But – oh no! – it’s exactly the same dress that Kirsten Dunst wore to some Golden Globes parties three years ago. Imagine the fuss that this incident has caused. Seriously, imagine it. It’s mental.
The Golden Globes 2006 were supposed to be Reese Witherspoon’s (DVDs) night
– the evening where she finally shook off her image as a cutesy ditz
who only ever gets roles as sexy ghosts in dire rom-coms and was able
to stand up and be counted as a serious award winning actor. And that
partially happened; Reese won the Best Actress Golden Globe for her
role in Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line.
Instead, though, the Golden Globes 2006 will be remembered for being
the night where Reese Witherspoon wore a ‘vintage’ Chanel dress that
Kirsten Dunst had already worn a few years ago. The horror! This, in
Hollywood circles, is an offence punishable only by death. Or, more
likely, by reports of all kinds of bitchiness followed up by snivelling ‘no we love each other really’ official statements.
After rumours that Reese Witherspoon’s rep was so furious with Chanel there were vows that Reese would never wear another piece of Chanel again, the following statement was released by the Witherspoon publicists:
"Although it was disappointing that the dress had already been worn,
Reese looked beautiful and the bigger deal is Reese won the Golden
Globe for her work in ‘Walk the Line.’ I still love Chanel, my clients
still love Chanel, and we are still working with them."
And Chanel has followed suit by saying:
"Chanel apologises for the oversight that Reese Witherspoon’s dress was
previously worn to a Golden Globes after party three years ago. We are
honoured that Reese chose to wear Chanel and thought she looked
beautiful. We congratulate her on her well-deserved win."
So everyone is friends again. The same, sadly, cannot be said for the woman who plays June Ackland in The Bill and Judi Shekoni from Celebrity Love Island, who still aren’t talking after they both attended a 1997 awards ceremony in the same pair of BHS pumps. Or something. Probably.
