It never rains but it pours for Kylie Minogue, does it? After spending 18 months full to the gills with breast cancer, Kylie has now had to cut short her triumphant comeback tour because she gets a bit of a poorly throat whenever she sings a song.
And now that Kylie Minogue has had to kill one concert halfway through and cancel two more, those close to Kylie are apparently worried that she might be pushing herself too far. The worst case scenario, obviously, would be that these stories of respiratory tract infections are a front for something more serious, like the cancer coming back. Actually, no, who are we kidding – the worst case scenario would very obviously be if Kylie Minogue decided not to cancel her concerts and sent in Dannii Minogue to take her place, thereby subjecting thousands of music fans to a lesson in torment and misery that we dare not even dream of.
It was all going so well for Kylie Minogue. After she was diagnosed with breast cancer in the middle of 2005, Kylie had a long and brave struggle against the illness, often being forced to watch Little Britain DVDs for upwards of two hours at a time. As the cancer started to fade away we saw glimpses of the old Kylie Minogue we knew and – if not loved – could mock quite often without being screamed at for being tasteless. For instance, Kylie ditched conventional transport for a succession of elephants and wrote her very own mind-numbing kiddie book.
And as soon as the cancer had buggered off, Kylie Minogue hit the publicity treadmill as hard as a former star of Neighbours could have ever wished, pushing herself to do the Kylie: I'm OK interview, the Kylie: Best-Dressed Woman award and the Kylie: No More Cancer comeback tour. But now sources close to Kylie Minogue are worried that she's taken too much on, as Kylie has only gone and buggered herself up again. BBC News reports:
Kylie Minogue has cancelled two further tour dates after ill health forced her to pull out of a concert on Saturday. She ended the concert at Manchester's MEN Arena after an hour, telling fans she had a cold. Her concerts on Monday and Tuesday have also been cancelled. A spokesman said she had been diagnosed with a respiratory tract infection. Minogue, 38, launched the UK leg of her Showgirl Homecoming Tour on New Year's Eve, following her recovery from treatment for breast cancer. Her spokesman said: "Kylie has been diagnosed by doctors as having a moderately severe respiratory tract infection and doctors have insisted that she not perform in the immediate future."
It's not unusual for a knackered throat to arse up a concert, of course: Mick Jagger's sore throat did more damage to the last Rolling Stones tour than Keith Richards' brain-drilled head, and Jessica Simpson also knows the misery of a gammy voice – even if most saw that as proof of a benevolent god – but Kylie's tour cancellation is more of a worry because of all that cancer business. Although it hasn't been openly stated, there seems to be an undercurrent of panic that Kylie Minogue is hiding a deeper problem. And rightly so – if saying that we had cancer again meant that we'd be sent a bundle of Little Britain DVDs, we'd say we just had a cold too.
