Pink NBC Sunday Night Football songJust because we're English doesn't mean we're ignorant about American football. Years of playing John Madden games have taught us that it's all about picking a random squiggle and then getting pushed over by a big bloke.

OK, so we nothing about American football, except for one thing. Pink - the shouty singer responsible for Official Worst Song Ever Get The Party Started - has just been signed to sing the theme tune to NBC Sunday Night Football. However, any pressure that Pink may be feeling about spearheading a widely-watched sports programme like Sunday Night Football must be eased by the knowledge that whatever she does won't even come close to being as terrible as the cover of Heroes that Kasabian did for the ITV World Cup coverage this year.

Pink prides herself on not being lumped in with vacuous pop muppets like Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson, and she's managed to do this mainly by having a voice like a binman in a wind tunnel and not wearing bikinis in pop videos. Except for the video where Pink did wear a bikini, but that was just to mock girls who wear bikinis in videos even though - since she was wearing a bikini in a video - she was one of the people she was mocking. Understand?

Pink also manages to distance herself from the grinning cleavages of the pop scene by saying things about politics sometimes and doing way hardcore things like marrying men who ride motorbikes, and now Pink is doing the soundtrack for NBC Sunday Night Football too, just to show how much like a man she really is.

Pink has ripped off I Hate Myself For Loving You by Joan Jett created a brand new song called Waiting All Day For Sunday Night for NBC Sunday Night Football, and NBC producer Fred Gaudelli couldn't be happier:

"We chose Pink as the signature voice because she is a tremendous talent with a crossover appeal that makes her relevant to all segments of our audience. A football fan knows the anticipation of waiting all day for the big game. When you hear this song on Sunday nights, you'll know the big game is about to kick off."

Obviously, just letting Pink take charge of all the NBC football music is a risky affair - judging by her past form her next album will be a terrible load of rubbish that nobody will buy - and so film composer John Williams has also been asked to contribute music to the Football Night In America show, and he's so excited he used an exclamation mark in his statement:

"It has been great fun and a rare privilege to have been asked to contribute music for NBC's broadcast of one of our country's greatest traditions — football! The outstanding athletes that play this game are similar to our great musicians in that they all require complete dedication and rigorous daily practice to stay sharp."

Yeah, that's why Pete Doherty is more or less the same as Jairzinho, isn't it? Anyway, in short, Pink has written a song about a sport we know nothing about for a show we'll never watch. This is news, people! News!
