Pink Floyd Reform To Bore Live 8 To Sleep

by Stuart Heritage on June 13, 2005 77 Comments

ZzzbabyPink Floyd (CDs) have announced they are to reform for the first time in 24 years to perform at the Live 8 concert, sending waves of apathy across the land.

It’s beginning to occur to hecklerspray that Live 8 might not be an attempt to encourage the leaders of the world to drop African debt, but an elaborate plan to bore a huge live audience to sleep so Bob Geldof can run around and nick their wallets.

Don’t believe us? You try and stay conscious through 16 hours of listening to Sting, Annie Lennox, Dido and Pink Floyd drone through their interminable bilge.

There seems to be a very serious problem at the heart of the Live 8
line-up. It’s as if the organisers have thought to themselves "Africa
is a very serious problem. We need some important bands"
, and then went
and confused ‘important’ with ‘self important’.

The thing that unites the majority of the Live 8 performers is a
deathly seriousness. There’s Chris Martin from Coldplay (CDs), who writes
little notes on his hand to remind him that he has to make trade fair and things.

Or U2 (iPods), a band whose last two albums are made of the exact the
same song over and over, and whose singer thinks that being able to
rhyme "mole" with "hole" in a song gives him the same power as elected
leaders of the world.

And the addition of Pink Floyd only reinforces this seriousness.
Here’s a quick history lesson. Pink Floyd were a brilliant band who
wrote genius songs like Bike, a song about a mouse called Gerald. Then their leader, Syd Barrett (CDs), took
too many drugs, went mental and ran off to hide forever in Cambridge.

After this, the remaining members of Pink Floyd disappeared up their
arses and produced some of the most intensely self-important albums of
all time. Don’t trust anyone that says they like Dark Side Of The Moon
- they don’t really like it, they just want to look deep in order to
get into your pants.

And then there was the movie of their album The Wall, one of the
most needlessly indulgent pieces of film anyone is ever likely to see.
And who was the star of the film? Bob Geldof. And to help Bob save the
world, Pink Floyd are reforming for the first time since 1981.

The members of Pink Floyd have been lying relatively low in the last
quarter of a century. The nearest thing to high-profile any of them
have done was when bassist Roger Waters played Glastonbury in 2002. We
say ‘played’ – a better description was that he made a bunch of loud
elephant noises shoot around a field in surround sound.

But anyway, back to Live 8 – where’s the fun? More than anything,
Live 8 needs a splash of colour – someone like James Brown or The
Hives
. Even – and we never thought we’d be saying this – Status Quo.

Who would be in your ideal Live 8 line-up? Leave your comments below.

All I have to say is: Stuart, you suck ass!!! I think that it is so awesome that Floyd is reuniting. I only wish I could be in London to see it. I got goosebumps when I heard about it. I would give my left testicle to be there to see them, as this will probably be my only chance. I don’t think that this 1 event will spawn a tour. But I can wish! Wish they were here!

Try to stay conscious? You must be in your teenage years. I’m sure you would probably prefer to see the White Stripes and maybe even Avril. “The Wall” sold more than 23 million copies, ranking it #3 on the RIAA list of best selling albums of all time, which undoubtedly required conscious fans. It’s interesting how you categorized both James Brown and the Hives as a needed splash of color. James Brown most likely would not be able to perform since he probably has a pending legal issue, and who gives a shit about the Hives? Are they still around. Admittedly, all of the “flavor of the week” bands have their place, just not in this situation where the goal is to raise global awareness about poverty in the third world – and what better way to do so than with globally respected bands and humanitarians (Geldoff).

You are obviously one of the few people who don’t appreciate what Pink Floyd’s “the dark side of the moon” has done for music. You should also consider getting your facts straight before bad mouthing the band. They’ve played plenty of times in the last quarter of a century. You sir, are a moron who is entitled to his opinion.
Good day.
(Can’t wait to see them on July 2nd!!)

i think this is horribly written, not knowing anything about either the site or the articles author. all i have to say is, yes dido is a sleeper and yes i too hate the band U2. HOWEVER, my ideal concert would not be yours, and i repsect that i hold a difference in opinion. Perhaps paul mccartney, pink floyd and some of the other listed bands can bring out particular people. i think what geldoff is trying to do is bring as many flavors to the table so he can get the kids to eat. as far as floyd is concerned, I saw the live version of the wall, played in berlin, and i thought it was horrible, however, pink floyd are gods in rock n roll, and nothing will change that opinion, even if they drop out last second. dark side of the moon is one of the best rock albums and is supported by numbers, and talking the way you do about it is like saying to your grandmothers face that shes fat. and futhermore, what band didnt have a little poop-stain for an album, dvd, or related material. Look at the beatles Yellow Submarine Cartoon. though it has a great following, i thikn it was really a sell out and a poop-stain to the extreme. You gotta think before you attack such a wonderful gathering as live-8. wouldnt you like to see the world in harmony for maybe one day? withdrawal your comments, appologize and live life to the fullest. dont spend your time ruining something that has potential to be the largest worldwide “shoutout”…im only 20, by the way, and even i think your comments are childish. So, if NOT Pink Floyd – then who should be playing? Some ‘one-hit-wonder-chart-friendly-in-bed-with-NME-flavour-of-the-month’ who no-one has probably heard of outside of the UK?
Come on, Stuart, put that copy of ‘The Wall’ down and ‘fess up…

Certainly, you don’t understand anything about music. You probably rather go and listen to stupid songs from 50 cents, Spears and etc. I bet you are not more than 24. Kid, Pink Floyd is the greatest band ever. Dark side of the moon and the Wall change the music history. Hope you grown up.

Having seen the original Wall concert (best show ever even attempted, in my opinion) I would love you to name one single form of live musical entertainment on a stage which is more exciting than watching Pink Floyd perform together.

A world where Pink Floyd never existed would leave us in a pretty awful place, musically.

The best thing about your article is that it makes sure the next time I see something posted by you, I’ll know to dismiss it first and ask questions later.

Word of advice: Zit-faced 13 year olds should refrain from commenting on anything that is beyond their limited comprehension!
Pink Floyd Reform To Bore Live 8 To Sleep?????? Frack Me! Where did your parents dig you up?????
I’m in my mid 20’s, and I worship this band, but hey, I am aware of the fact that maybe they’re not everyone’s cup of tea. If you don’t appreciate them, fine, not every one does, but at least do attempt to get your facts straight before you go and post something this laughable.
Second word of advice: Isn’t it about time to step out of that nappy now?

Very funny – reminds me of Matt Lucas doing Jo Whiley on Rock Profile “oh, Pink Floyd, what have they ever done, apart from bring happiness or empathy to literally millions of people around the world for the last 40 years. But what about The Hives, who did exactly that, just on a much smaller scale, or Slitcom, who split up before their first single was even released?”

There’s a reason why people like the stuff. Love it or hate it, it’s genuinely moved people. Unless, of course, those millions of people were buying the LPs and CDs just to annoy you. I’m pretty tempted to buy another copy myself, just to join in.

Nah, you don’t really hate them, you just want to look like an individual in order to get into someone’s pants. But whatever crutch you need to help your image and status – that’s your problem. We’ll just happily carry on being genuinely passionate about the music.

Can’t wait for the future… to listen to an eventual 50-year-old Hives fan justify their tastes! “Changed my life, man!”

You suck arse, man. Really, large, pasty arses. In fact, if you ever stop sucking your arse, you’ll notice that the music of Pink Floyd is actually good. Not self important, but good.

The writer of this article must be under 30 years old… and probably loves the current state of the rewind and rehash music industry… Basicall a TRL fan ! Roger Waters still acts like a little spoiled kid, previously refusing to tour with the band, but to deny the fact that they are in a league with the Beatles and The Stones etc. giving the world REAL QUALITY music for decades… music that will endure far beyond their demise… is pathetic. You are a critic, not a creator… and your opinion is much like an asshole !!! … and I don’t want any part of it… Hey you can always leave after Madonna performs !!!

Where’s this phrase ‘suck ass’ from anyway? it’s appeared on this page half a dozen times… Why not be a little more creative? Hey Hecklerspray! Go lick a dogs ass till it bleeds! Whatever.

I liked Floyd when I was in my teens/20s, and I watched the Wall and yeah it was good, and then my tastes changed and I moved on. Its funny to see people who weren’t even born when this stuff was new getting so worked up about it. But I suppose that’s the point – the music engenders emotion in them. Which is a lot more than you can say for anything produced by the line dancing lip-synching saccharine clones the music industry is churning out these days… Long live the indies!

i must add…floyd with syd had this feeling…an eery isolated feeling that in my books did make it better, however, one cannot rule out the utmost utopian feel of the euphoric pink floyd of post-syd years. i think they broke down twice, once when they booted syd, and then once waters WAS gone, floyd no longer registered. im not a huge waters fan but the wall, dark side, animals…cooooommmmeeee on people, ANIMALS! The one album ive heard straight through an easy 100 times.

do yourselves a favor. roll a nice tight spliff, lock yourselves in a small closet, blast animals and puff away, we shall see how boring they are when you step out of the closet red-eyed and the only words registering from your mouth is repeated “wows”

BONG!

I love pink floyd as much as anyone but, come on, who cares about sales? The Wall may have sold 100 million or something, but it’s still a self-indulgent mess. It’s arguably the least good Floyd of the 70s.

Anyway, I wonder what they’d play and how much time they’ll be given to play it. If they decide to play their best stuff they may have to leave the stage after they tune up.

Reply

justin ross wagner June 14, 2005 at 4:30 pm

big al, if what your sayin is can they create the sound that theyve had before, heres hopin…but at the same time, i dont wanna get my hopes up. im just hoping they dont try to recreate but rather reencompass what they used to emit from their speakers and moniters, and welcome their new thoughts and ideas. Maybe those new thoughts and ideas wont be the best(ahem division bell, ahem), but im not sure x-years later that floyd can be floyd all over again. i, for one, am just happy to see a band with substance attempt a return. im 20 years old, im tired of everyband sounding like creed, staind or some punk ass punk band..that doesnt even play punk. and the only bands making come backs are 80′s glam rock bands like def leppard and such. there is very little music that appeals to me these days(just an opinion)

i was brought up to love rock and resent rap

judgin on whats out these days, theres more talent in rap and i am ashamed to say that…(just an opinion)

im aware im ranting but this article somewhat peeved me not becuase the insult to floyd or live 8, but more or less the ignorance the author conveys with his close minded views(just an opinion)

im not saying live 8, too, is gonna be phenominal(tho indications point to it being a blast) but im saying live 8 is a chance for all of our voices, every single person, from the ghettos to the sticks, to share one voice. and have one hell of a time together at that. ive grown up in a very judgemental society that is broken down into cliques. just once id like to see society as a whole, not as individual parts. were all the same, rich or poor. know why? we all know what it means to hurt. we all work our asses off to make a penny, just to have it taken away by the govt. or enconomy….

i view this as retribution from all the performers for all the money ive spent on concerts. whens the last time you truly got something of value for free?

lets just enjoy the show and quit being naysayers all the time(just an opinion)

so cheers, to floyd, to live 8, and to diversified opinions.

You are just trying to be “self important”, dear. You happen too to be monumentally bad at it.
The sole fact that Roger, Rick, Nick and Dave have set differences aside to please a few lads in Hyde Park with their amazing music for even “A” song, beats the purpose of your mediocre thesis.
There’s no self importance in a gig that looks forward to give even a crusty rusty penny to a continent that on top that is dying of AIDS and hunger, is also drying up.

Are you giving any of your undeserved salary to thousands of diying people? didn’t think so, you are just too “Self Important”.

Anyone who thinks the Floyd is boring – either before or after Syd – is the type of person who owns every Brittany Spears CD.

It’s funny how people who don’t get progressive music like Floyd, Yes, ELP, et al, usually come away thinking these bands are self-important and pretentious, just because they use the same musical structures as Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart. The music is too complex for them, and too long for their short attention spans. So it’s hard to hold their musical ignorance against folk like Stuart. If they don’t get it, they won’t like it. My advice to Stuart is to take some music appreciation courses before he makes a baffoon of himself in public.

So, bring on the Floyd. What would improve the lineup for this (or any) concert, IMO, is adding bands like Porcupine Tree and maybe The Flower Kings.

Stuart you ass. Pink Floyd was brilliant because of their Musicianship. Any real Musician can recognize how in depth Floyd was musically. Gilmour is one of the best Soloists of our time. In the 70′s Rick Wright was one of the most influental keyboard players with his great synth lines. Floyd’s music still inspires the masses who have a brain for real music and understand the complexities of the Floyd style. GO listen to the other “Pink” with her three chord songs and drum loop and SHUT UP Stuart you jerk.

Does everybody have to think like you ‘fans’? Is this what Pink Floyd has done? Created a bunch of fucking morons with nothing better to add than abuse.

Pink Floyd is fucking muso prog wank if you ask me but that’s not the point – the point is that you lot have shown yourselves up. Very childish, aren’t you, for a bunch of self-professed music lovers with supposed mature tastes. Get off your high horses.

For a band that split up 20 years ago over a fucking NAME and with Gilmour and Waters not speaking to one another in all that time, I’d suggest that this sort of petty behaviour has rubbed off on you idiots judging by these pathetic dribbles of comments. Grow up.

I think people take things way to seriously. Musical tastes are personal and intimate – if some bloke on an obscure blog wants to trash them, so what? Pink Floyd have released some very good music – but also some shit stuff, too – like any band. Roger Waters is a bit of a twat – especially for doing that Cuntryside Alliance gig – but he’s no different from any other enigmatic frontman of a rock band.

If you recognise this, you won’t have to be so bitter at some random guy spouting off. Anyway – his music tastes are’nt exactly better….
