Who'd have thought that the Phil Spector murder trial would be so exciting? After all, watching a confused old man dress up like a middle-management lesbian and stand trial for shooting a woman in the face has never been that popular a pastime.
But the Phil Spector murder trial is now hotting up to such an extent that blisteringly exciting things have happened even though the trial isn't even taking place this week. How exciting? Well, a surprise witness has turned up claiming that he saw one of Phil Spector's lawyers sneak a piece of evidence out of Phil Spector's LA home to withhold it from the investigation. So how exciting is the Phil Spector murder trial? It's 'man carrying a small piece of tooth' exciting, and don't you forget it.
At the moment, nobody – possibly including Phil Spector himself – knows if Phil Spector shot and killed Lana Clarkson in 2003, but that isn't stopping people from reaching their own conclusions on the matter. Admittedly most people's conclusions are along the lines of 'Yo Spector, what's with the freaking hair?' but they're conclusions none the less.
However, thanks to the testimonies of a bunch of women who Phil Spector allegedly pulled guns on and an opening statement that described Phil Spector as "sinister and deadly," it's been hard to find people who don't think that Phil Spector is guilty. Those people do exist, however, and they may include Bruce Cutler – Spector's defence lawyer who's so ill that the whole trial has been delayed until he feels better – and Henry Lee, a forensics expert who claims that Phil Spector would have been six feet away from Clarkson at the time of shooting.
But now there's a new twist – surprise witness Greg Diamond has testified in a special LA hearing where he's been making all sorts of claims about evidence tampering. As Reuters reports, he claims that Phil Spector's ex-attorney Robert Shapiro, ex-lawyer Sara Caplan and pathologist Dr Michael Baden went to his house after the shooting to stash away some evidence:
Ordered to take the stand by [Judge] Fidler, Diamond told the court that he went to the crime scene with Shapiro, Baden, Caplan, famed forensic scientist Henry Lee and other members of Spector's defense team. There, Diamond said, he saw Caplan find a small white object and hand it to Baden. He said the object was then passed around to the rest of the defense team. "Dr. Baden did make mention of what the item was," Diamond said. "He said it was a fragment of a tooth … Everyone had seen the item in some capacity."
Prosecutors have long claimed that the defence team were in possession of an item of evidence, but Phil Spector's defence continues to deny this. It's not clear what bearing Greg Diamond's testimony will have on the Phil Spector murder trial, but tampering with evidence is a serious charge and one that carries a serious sentence – straight to bed with only semi-lesbian wigs for everyone.

I’m sure they are not “in possession of an item of evidence”. Not anymore at least.
