Pete Doherty - the pasty and slightly confused face of British youth - escaped a prison sentence today after admitting to seven different drugs possession charges. He’s free to not turn up to his own gigs again!

According to the judge, Pete will now have to take a 12-month drug rehabilitation course with monthly check-ups to keep him on the straight and narrow. And if the course keeps him out of recording studios so he doesn’t get to make any more rubbish music, more the better. But that’s just probably wishful thinking.

Pete Doherty (CDs) must dread going outside these days - every time he does,
the police are all over him like a rash. Back in November, Pete was
arrested for possession of heroin and cocaine after police stopped him
and he reportedly told them, "If you search my car, I’m fucked." Four
days later, the same thing happened after police found heroin,
morphine, crack cocaine and cannabis in his car. Then, on January 26,
the same thing happened again, as police found Pete was carrying a wrap
of cocaine.

Pete Doherty pleaded guilty at three earlier hearings to seven counts of possessing controlled drugs
relating to these incidents, the court was told. According to This Is London:

Wearing a black jacket, white shirt open at the neck and a crucifix,
Doherty spoke only to confirm his name and address during today’s
hearing. He appeared bleary-eyed and disorientated and frequently
glanced towards the back of the court, where about 20 of his fans were
sitting in the public gallery. Sean Curran, representing the singer, told the court Doherty was "only a harm to himself".

That’s not true - we’ve listened to his album. If that doesn’t constitute harm, we don’t know what does.

Now that he has avoided a jail sentence, Pete Doherty must complete a 12-month community order and take a 12-month drugs rehabilitation course complete with monthly drugs test. He was warned by the judge not to break the terms of the order, or else he’ll be marched back to court at the speed of light, and:

"The court will then be able to increase the
order or it can revoke the order and sentence you in a different way.
This could include sending you to prison."

Pete Doherty is due back in court for a review of the order on March 8. That’s in 28 days, which - by our calculations - leaves Pete enough time to get arrested another 53 times before then.
