With technology being so cheap and cheerful, any old idiot can visit their local branch of Comet and pick up an affordable camera.
After charging up the battery and throwing the instructions aside, it’s then time to hit record and make the next bit of grainy footage that will appear on YouTube. Or if you really make it big, one of those clip show type ditties about the internet.
And with the introduction of DIY footage flooding video sharing sites, we see a removal of slick production and snappy editing. Most of the time, we hear blips in the sound and see the producer’s arm in every other frame. One of our favourite musical acts of late, The Candle Thieves are back with another groovy video that might not have a Hollywood budget attached, but still shows what you can do with your imagination. We’re All Gonna Die (Have Fun) is after the jump.
Any song title with the word ‘die’ in it might usually be given to some depraved horror fanatic director to work with. Line up a gang of aged virgins; add a chainsaw and gallons of blood for an end result which is unbroadcastable for the mainstream. The Candle Thieves have decided to opt away from this theme and taken an approach we can relate to.
Remember Saturday morning cartoons where we got to see repeats of shows that our parents watched? Things like Tom & Jerry and Roadrunner were brilliant animated shorts featuring plenty of ultraviolence, but with a warm fuzzy feeling attached. Watching a cat being belted across the face with a blistering hot iron could only be acceptable in animated form.
The video for We’re All Gonna Die (Have Fun) features our two hapless heroes, Scott McEwan and The Glock, sing their ace new song whilst anvils try to squish them, bombs threaten to blow them up and bear traps look on for a tasty snack of human leg.
The Candle Thieves release their debut single, We’re All Going To Die (Have Fun), on March 22 through Big Life Recordings. It precedes the release of their debut album, Sunshine & Other Misfortunes on April 5. We can only imagine it’ll be crammed full of songs that are the finest creations to be pressed onto CD.
