The Oscars are steaming towards us in a whirlwind of sequins, fake sincerity and gay cowboy films. But who’s going to win the bloody things? Specifically the Best Actress Oscar.

The nominees for the Best Actress Oscar have caught the public’s imagination the most this year, simply because a couple of them are British. And one of them played a dead man’s wife. And one of them was Aeon Flux. Talk about variation. You had better make sure you place a huge bet on the outcome of the Best Actress Oscar category, as it’s pretty much anyone’s game this year.

Keira Knightley - Keira Knightley played Elizabeth Bennett in Pride
And Prejudice. Pride And Prejudice is a film that demands Oscars.
Mainly because it’s full of English people walking around being all
clipped with everybody in a deeply repressed way all the time. In
short, it’s the role that Keira Knightley was born to do. And she
didn’t get her bum out and then spazz all over the press about her bum
in Pride And Prejudice like she did when she was in Domino. Still,
Keira’s obviously not going to win the Best Actress Oscar this year.

Judi Dench - Judi Dench played Laura Henderson in Mrs Henderson
Presents. It’s weird that Judi Dench is such a well-respected actress,
when most British people know her for being in the rubbish old lady
sitcom As Time Goes By. If she was in a film scratching her arse for
one billisecond, she’d still get nominated for the Best Actress Oscar.
As it happens, we’ve yet to see Mrs Henderson Presents, mainly because
we hear Bob Hoskins rubs his willy against the camera at one point.
Tellingly, Judi Dench has had hardly any coverage for her nomination,
so we think that she won’t get the Best Actress Oscar this year.

Charlize Theron - Charlize Theron played Josey Aimes in North
Country. Charlize Theron has scuppered her chances of ever winning
another Best Actress Oscar because of the manner in which she won her
first. In Monster, Charlize Theron got all fat and ugly and did stuff
to her eyebrows. Now, anything short of full-scale amputation will be
seen as a failure to match her previous success. In North Country,
Charlize just made her face a bit dirty and talked about equality.
That’s a half-hearted way to go about getting an Oscar, young lady. Try
