One Of Savage Garden Gay Marries His Boyfriend

It's OK, we know what you're thinking. You're upset that Oprah Winfrey isn't gay, aren't you? We know, it's hard to take. but here's a kind of commiseration - Darren Hayes from Savage Garden is gay. Oh come on, like you didn't know.

You must remember Savage Garden - somehow, 23 million of you bought their Affirmation album and billions more of your will have suffered through appointments at hairdressers while their songs blasted in your eardrums. Anyway - Darren Hayes, the Savage Garden singer, has come out to his fans. And just to make it kind of official, Darren Hayes married his boyfriend. A month ago.

A few years ago, you couldn't move for Savage Garden. Turn on the radio and there was Savage Garden. Turn on your TV and there was Savage Garden. Walk into any shop and there was a stack of Savage Garden CDs. And even more ubiquitous than Savage Garden were all the girls stumbling around the streets oblivious to everything other than their deep love for Savage Garden singer Darren Hayes. It was as if Darren Hayes was singing "If love was red then she was colour blind/All her friends they've been tried for treason," directly at them. Girls, prepare to be heartbroken.

Darren Hayes just can't go on living a lie - he's decided to come out as gay. Some would argue that going to a registry office a month ago and getting married to his long-term boyfriend would constitute coming out, but nobody seemed to take any notice of that, so Darren Hayes has left a message on his website where he comes out all over again:

"As so many of you have given me your heart and soul over the past 10 years I thought it only fitting that I too return the respect and inform you of the most significant event in my life. On June 19th 2006 I married my boyfriend of two years, Richard, in a Civil Partnership ceremony in London. I can honestly say it was the happiest day of my life. I feel lucky to live in an era where my relationship can be considered legally legitimate and I commend the UK Government for embracing this very basic Civil Liberty. I'm proud of who I am, and after what felt like an eternity, I'm finally in a place where my heart is secure and content. And I can finally make sense of all of the searching."

So Darren Hayes is gay and Oprah Winfrey is straight. What a crazy, mixed up world we live in, eh? Now that Darren Hayes is being honest and open about his personal life, you'd expect him to feel the same about his professional life. Since Savage Garden split up, Darren Hayes has embarked upon a mediocre solo career which has only thrown up one top ten single in four years. But, in his coming out speech, Darren Hayes said of his new album:

"I've been moving toward a career that is more closely aligned with 'art' than it is 'commerce'."

It's a bit of a shame that he can't come out and say he's not expecting to sell very many records, isn't it?
