Sometimes we try to imagine how Lindsay Lohan could possibly be any less popular than she is now and – short of her spraying orphans in the face with liquidised poo while dressed as a KKK member, we're honestly stumped.
It seems people are actually lining up to take potshots at Lindsay Lohan these days, and not just anonymous internet jerkoffs like us, either – people that Lindsay Lohan has worked with are straining at the leash to slag Lindsay Lohan off. The latest name to give Lindsay Lohan a swift kicking is Jane Fonda, who has managed to lay into Lindsay Lohan in that awful passive aggressive way that your Mum does. OK, OK – that our Mum does.
Not so long ago Lindsay Lohan could move freely throughout the world doing whatever she wanted, like having sex with McFly or inexplicably injuring herself on a teacup. It didn't matter, since this sort of thing is what we expect from our stars of ginger girls driving about in magical cars, and we wanted Lindsay Lohan to carry on in this way forever.
However, when Lindsay Lohan tried to professionally grow up by making all sorts of serious films about politicians and rockstars getting shot, it was important for Lindsay Lohan to remember that she needed to personally grow up too. And did she? Well, no. Not really. Unless you count making stunning inane political statements and wanting to go and shoot Iraqis as grown up. Which we don't. More importantly, however, it looked as if Lindsay Lohan was starting to believe her own hype.
In July, after a hard night of non-stop dehydration, Lindsay Lohan took a day off work – work being the filming of Georgia Rule – and wound up getting a bollocking from her producer who, in the form of a letter, shouted Lindsay Lohan down for partying all the time and not concentrating on her work. Then, a few days later, William H Macy said that he wanted to kick Lindsay Lohan's ass for being disrespectful to film crews. And now it's the turn of Jane Fonda to step up for some first-class Lindsay Lohan slagging. Jane Fonda – who was Barberella and can therefore do no wrong – is Lindsay's co-star in Georgia Rule, and had to say this about her:
"I think every once in a while, a very, very young person who is burning both ends of the candle needs to have somebody say, 'You know, you're going to pay the piper. You better slow down.' So I think it was good… [Lindsay's] in the magazines, so you always know what she's doing because you can just read about it in the tabloids. She parties all the time. And you know she's very young and she can get away with it. But, you know, it's hard after a while to party very hard and work very hard. She'll learn that… She's so alone out there in the world in terms of structure and people to nurture her. She is so talented. Oh my gosh, she can access emotion like nothing… And she just makes me cry. I just want to take her in my arms and hold her until she's grown up."
Yeah, and if you could tell Lindsay Lohan to wear knickers once in a while when you've got her in your arms, Jane, that'd be a big help too.
