Nintendo Sorry For Saying ‘Spastic’

Super Mario Nintendo SpasticThat Super Mario chap can be a controversial sort sometimes.

Not only is he happy to capitalise on non-union plumbing regulations in the Mushroom Dimension, his constant coin-thieving has left several areas of the Nintendo world in a state of recession. Last we heard, Kirby the cloud was now a six-times divorced crack addict, while that fox who flew planes has been reduced to carrying out sexual favours round the back of Burger King.

And now? Now the mustachioed fool has really put his foot in it.

He's only gone and used the word 'spastic.'

Spastic - a derogatory term for sufferers of cerebral palsy - has pretty much become a no-no in modern culture. After being bastardised as a playground insult for a nation of grubby children, the lost-at-sea status of the term was compounded in 1994 when the Spastics Society changed its name to Scope. In short: it's really a bit of a twattish thing to say, all in all.

So - what with the term carrying hugely offensive implications - it probably wouldn't be best to use it in a lighthearted video game. Obviously someone forgot to tell Nintendo.

Wii game Mario Party 8 has been recalled after a wrong version of the game was released due to an 'assembly error'. The trouble emerged when people were a little bit miffed about a segment which implored them to quite alarmingly "turn this train spastic."

Red-faced Nintendo said:

“Unfortunately we have discovered that a small number of games contain the wrong version of the disk due to an assembly error. We have therefore decided to recall all copies of the game from UK retailers so that this mistake can be corrected. We will re-launch Mario Party 8 in the UK as soon as possible and will announce a new launch date shortly. We very much regret any inconvenience caused."

No doubt the faulty version will become a collectors item among geek-types. Just like that quickly-deleted version of Sonic The Hedgehog in which our speedy blue hero paused between adventures to recite a load of Bernard Manning jokes.

Even Dr. Robotnik thought that was out of order.

Ahh, Scope. And thus the term “scoper” was born.

  2. Deacon Says:

It’s outrageous; spazzo is clearly the wrong terminolology, Joey Deacon is obviously the most appropirate insult. I would aslo accept Joey, Deeeeacon
    and Archdeacon.
