MySpace Trawl: TV Off

There seems to be too many awards ceremonies. And they all have loads in common, like being uninspiring, dull and rigged. Allegedly.
This last month alone has seen the Brit awards reward all the people from its academy, the Grammys bore us to death with so many categories that we were amazed we didn’t win one, and the NME awards, which attempt to booze up young indie boys and the odd indie girl into doing something rock and roll, like leaving the toilet seat up and not replacing the loo roll.
Award shows, it seems, only benefit the people who are never off the cover of Q or who are relentlessly played on local radio. Maybe one day hecklerspray will launch its own awards ceremony. But don’t expect decent trophies. Instead we’ll take some glue, foil and glitter and make a pretty figurine. In the mean time, we fight on to find undiscovered talent for your benefit. Like TV Off.
It seems like here are fewer bands that can make a living out of what they're doing. It’s almost like creating music is a part-time job and something to do on the weekends. So in that respect, no-one really seems to take themselves seriously.
It also never helps that TV Off are from Finland. Because it’s not quite the hotbed of music talent, record label agents won't flock over there to see what’s around. But this electro pop trio seem to be having success in their own right. We think.
With gigs coming up on their calendar and a sensible number of MySpace friends, they appear to have conquered Finland. By a sensible amount of MySpace friends, we guess they’ll never be able to have their own TV show on BBC3.
Usually we badly attempt to summarise the band's music to try and make you want to listen to them. But we like TV Off’s own biography, so we are going to be lazy for a change and let you read that instead:
“Take a swim in the water and.. no wait, that's another story. TV Off is a human band produced by imaginary animals such as giraffes and lions, and that's why they are set to crank it up big time! Their sound has so far gained fame among domestic DJ's and radio stations and they have also been invited by the Royal Family of Great Britain to play Her Majesty's 250 year birthday celebration party, so it really looks like the band is on its way to proper Bollywood stardom! The TV Off sound isn't really electro nor pop and definitely not weak boy/girl band trash - the audience is free to draw its own conclusions. To put it plain and simple: it's good and fun music!”
OK that might not have helped. But it made us laugh like idiots. For a more rounded take on their sound, think electro pop. But by electro pop, please don’t think of Erasure or The Pet Shop Boys. The best comparison would be one of Kylie's last few efforts. However, we all know that she’ll jump on whatever genre bandwagon is big at the moment. When her country and western album comes along in five years, you’ll know were right.
Whilst TV Off aren’t quite dancey enough for the nu rave generation to bop around to, they do have sufficient merit to be dropped in at an indie DJ set. You know, just to change the mood a bit from boring guitars to something with a bit of bite attached to it.
